Every dry season, as the rivers drop and those steep sandy banks are exposed, thousands of Southern Carmine Bee-eaters arrive to breed in Zambia! Suddenly the riverbanks are alive with colour — flashes of brilliant pink, turquoise and blue swooping over the water, disappearing into their nesting tunnels and bursting back out again. It’s known as the Carmine Carnival, and honestly, you don’t need to be a birder to be completely mesmerised by it.

But this season in South Luangwa came with an extraordinary little twist…

Among the thousands of Southern Carmines, a sharp-eyed guide from The Bushcamp Company spotted one lone Northern Carmine Bee-eater — a bird normally found some 2,000km away in the Sahel.

Just one tiny traveller, wildly off course, in amongst a carnival of its southern cousins. And apparently only the fourth ever recorded in South Luangwa. 🤯

Africa always has one more surprise up her sleeve.

If you’re travelling to South Luangwa between August and early December, the Carmine Carnival The Bushcamp Company is one of those seasonal spectacles absolutely worth timing your safari around.

Some days on holiday are lovely. And then there are the ones you talk about for years afterwards! Rafting the Zambezi is very firmly in that second category. 🌊🇿🇲

For anyone with a taste for adventure, this is quite simply one of the must-do experiences in Livingstone — and with the Low Water season now underway, the river is at its most exciting. The day begins beneath Victoria Falls at the famous Boiling Pot, where you climb into the raft at Rapid #1 and set off through the towering walls of the Batoka Gorge. From there, it is one spectacular rapid after another, all the way to Rapid #21. Big water. Huge scenery. Plenty of shouting, laughing and paddling — and that wonderful feeling of being somewhere completely wild. We have had so many guests come back from this trip absolutely buzzing, with some very simply declaring it the “best day ever.”

High-res photos of your adventure are included and there is also the option to finish the day with a complimentary sunset cruise, with only the applicable DNPW park entry fee payable. If adventure is your thing, put this one on the list!

From 24 October to 5 December 2026, Everwild Travel Portfolio is setting up the *only* camp inside Kasanka National Park for the bat migration. Not one of a few — the only one. Never too far from the prize.

One of Kuvina’s cubs, tucked into the branches of a sausage tree beside a kill safely stashed above the ground.

At this age, everything is still a lesson. How to climb, where to rest, when to follow, when to wait - slowly learning the skills that will one day define life as a leopard.

For now though, there’s something wonderfully innocent about it all. A full belly, a comfortable branch and the security of knowing Kuvina is never too far away.

Let’s talk regional logistics for a moment — because even the dreamiest safari needs a flight plan and Proflight Zambia is the one I trust to get you there.

Two cubs for Sungani’s leopardess 🐆🐆

There’s something rather special happening in one of the remotest corners of South Luangwa! Kuvina, a leopardess known to guides at Sungani since 2023, was recently spotted with a tiny cub tucked into the undergrowth. And then came the wonderful news — she has two cubs. 🥹

But this is more than a lovely leopard story.

The southern reaches of South Luangwa were once becoming increasingly difficult to access, with declining roads and increased poaching putting pressure on this wild corner of the park.

Then, slowly, things began to change.

Roads were restored. Conservation teams and scouts returned. Anti-poaching patrols were introduced. Local people were employed and communities became part of the story. The wilderness was given the space and protection it needed to recover.

And the animals started coming back. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wild dog, lion and leopard are now being seen in an area where wildlife had become increasingly scarce. The once-elusive leopards are returning, lions are reclaiming their territories — and now Kuvina is raising the next generation. Two tiny leopard cubs might just be one of the loveliest signs yet that rewilding really can work. 🌿

This is the Zambia I love. Not just extraordinary wildlife, but people working together to protect the wild places that make this country so special.
