Honoring a True Zambian Icon: Lieutenant General Peter Dingiswayo Zuze

Today, we look back at the incredible legacy of a man who dedicated his entire life to serving Zambia with absolute distinction—both on the battlefield and on the global diplomatic stage. Following his recent passing on September 14, 2026, Zambia remembers a pioneering leader who shaped our nation's history.

Lt. Gen. Zuze was a man of many "firsts" and a towering figure in our defense forces:

✈️ The First Indigenous Air Force Commander: In 1972, he broke barriers by becoming the first Zambian to lead the Zambia Air Force (ZAF).

🎖️ Unified Military Commander: From 1976 to 1977, he commanded the entire unified Zambia National Defence Force, leading both the air and army branches during a critical era of regional liberation. His legacy is permanently preserved at the Peter Zuze Air Force Base in Ndola.

Beyond his military uniform, Lt. Gen. Zuze was an exceptional diplomat who fought for Zambia's interests globally. He served with great honor as:

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted 164–1 to adopt the groundbreaking "Correct the Map" resolution!

Sponsored by Togo and fiercely backed by the African Union, this historic push is finally phasing out the deeply distorted Mercator map.

Did you know the Mercator map was created all the way back in 1569? Its inventor, Gerardus Mercator, designed it for one specific reason: sea navigation. Because it preserved straight compass lines, it helped European sailors cross oceans. But to do that, it severely stretched the planet at the poles and shrank regions near the equator. For centuries, this colonial-era artifact made Africa look the same size as Greenland, when Africa is actually 14 times larger!
