Seeing tea production in action from leaf to cup at Bwindi Lodge 🍃

At Volcanoes Safaris, Bwindi Lodge is the home of tea, a plant that miraculously regenerates every 2-3 weeks, making it an incredibly sustainable source of income. The art of picking is far more complex than it seems, and will give anyone a whole new appreciation for the process (I don’t think I made the cut during my apprenticeship).

Black tea and green tea are made from the same plant: one’s steamed (green tea, less caffeine) and one’s laid out to dry (black tea, more caffeine). We got a glimpse into the lifecycle and ended with a tea tasting to see which we preferred.

The best part was meeting a few of the people employed in the picking and processing. Tea production creates an opportunity for employment for the community adjacent to the national park, and all employees here are widows and widowers, often the only contributors for their families. They earn about $0.50 per basket (at about 5 baskets per day on average) and also earn from contributions from visitors.

Bravo to Bwindi Lodge and the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust for such a lovely experience and allowing us a glimpse into the work behind the cup! A whole new appreciation for the people + process behind it. Forever and always my favorite of the Volcanoes lodges. ✨

Is it even summer if we’re not in Greece?! Early July in Skopelos = Greek island summer without the crowds (but with all the sunshine and stunning views). Grateful for our sunny island escapes and sea air! 🇬🇷

When it comes to a rooftop with a view in Florence, understood the assignment. 11/10 must go for an aperitivo for a postcard Italian moment. It goes without saying, grab the outdoor table. ✨

BOAT DAYS ARE THE BEST DAYS 🛥️

Why take a ferry from Skopelos to Skiathos when you can charter a boat and make a full day out of it?! When it makes sense (that’s a question of logistics & budget!), I often suggest this for Compass & Vine | Travel Design clients connecting nearby islands. Our trip with Blue Horizon Boat Rental reminded me how much fun these days can be. 😍

Lunch at a casual taverna on the beach complete with the requisite house wine, paddleboarding along hidden caves, and pulling into charming ports. 100/10 day!

UBUD 🌱

Green on green on green. Ubud’s terraces are one of those rare places that actually out-deliver the photos despite being such a go-to for visitors. Also, despite the constant onslaught of info about Bali suffering from over tourism (which I appreciate is very much a real issue around the world), we must have picked the right year — Ubud was such a pleasant surprise with so few visitors during our time there!

NIHI Sumba | Edge of Wildness™ moments ✨

Champagne by the pool, a ‘spa safari’, days swimming with from sun up to sun down, the requisite vacay morning cappuccino, and watching horses out on their daily stroll on the beach. A picture perfect five days in Sumba!

Did someone say coffee? ☕️

I always joke that my one vice is coffee (I’m cool with it, by the way) so when we dropped in to Kyambura Gorge Lodge and learned about the coffee being produced here, we had to see it in action!

Through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, disadvantaged women are employed in producing coffee from the bean to the bag that you buy, and if was such a treat getting an afternoon with these sweet ladies who showed us their craft. I’d encourage anyone to build in time for these activities - they give you a glimpse into the work and process behind the scenes that you’d never otherwise appreciate. We saw each lady’s part of the process until the beans were ready to bag & sell in the shop. And because resourcefulness and sustainability are the name of the game, they use other parts of the coffee bean to make scrubs and soaps to sell so nothing goes to waste.

I’ll be thinking about these ladies when I brew my Kyambura Coffee. FYI, the bags come as whole bean but the lodge will grind it for you if you ask. Mine’s ready for my French press! 👌🏽

Magical moments with our little squad in Sumba ✨

A huge thank you to Scotty Bauer for capturing these family moments on the beach at NIHI | Edge of Wildness™. We’ll always have the sweetest memories from this little enclave with sunny pool days, balmy nights, horse races at sunset, beach BBQs, watching hatchlings head out to sea, and late night chats with new friends. Big thanks to my sweet sister and parents for this photoshoot in Indonesia to capture this moment in time and at the sweetest age!
