Team Diaspora, December is here!
Some of you have worked hard and bought cars that you plan to take back home. Let us give you some important tips (a word of advice):
If the car is yours and is registered in your name, and you have the Vehicle Registration Book (or Traffic Register Certificate), but you, the owner, do not have a driving permit from the country you are coming from, you will not be allowed to cross the border with the car.
If you look for someone who has a permit to drive your car across the border for you, make sure that the person whose name is on the Temporary Import Permit (TIP) is the one who will be driving that car on Zimbabwean soil.
Before you travel with the car, even if you have all the papers, make sure the car is officially cleared in South Africa or Botswana or wherever you are coming from and that you have a supporting document that proves the car has not been stolen and is legally registered according to the laws of the country you are leaving.
Do not let anyone whose name is not on the TIP drive your car in Zimbabwe without informing the police that this is what you intend to do.
Lastly, but not least: If your car breaks down, notify the nearest police or the nearest Zimra office before your TIP expires.
