News from Hwange National Park 🐘 🚂

The Elephant Express has had a busy season after returning from a stint in Bulawayo for a major service. During its time off the tracks, it was repainted and reupholstered and more importantly all engines and gearboxes were overhauled. It also underwent some upgrades including new axles and a much-improved suspension was fitted including state-of-the-art US-manufactured Firestone airbags! Gone is the shake, rattle and roll which passengers enjoyed anyway, replaced now by a silky smooth ride which takes roughly three hours, with the opportunity to stop for photos of wildlife along the way.

In 2023 Gonarezhou National Park saw a 21% increase in tourist numbers, with almost 11 000 people visiting the park, compared to 8 993 in 2022. It’s the highest number of visitors ever recorded for the park.

This growth in sustainable tourism not only shows an increase in people valuing wild, protected Gonarezhou, it also provides benefits to surrounding communities through employment and business opportunities.
