Three Anchors House — Harare’s 90s Prestige Tower

Completed in June 1995 after more than three years of construction (starting February 1992), Three Anchors House was Old Mutual’s bold statement of a “prestige office building” designed to stand the test of time.

Located on Jason Moyo Avenue, the building was designed by Fleet Utria to offer a prime business address with its own unmistakable identity. Its curved main tower appearing to “embrace” the frontage gives it a striking presence when viewed from across the street.

Old Mutual also ensured the building’s strong retail frontage capitalized on the busy Moyo Avenue location, attracting well known tenants like Barclays and Store Bros.

It remains a distinctive piece of Harare’s commercial skyline, a vision of durability and self sufficiency from the 1990s.

Did You Know?

Runhare House

“Runhare” is a Shona slang term for telephone a fitting name for Runhare House, the former headquarters of the Post & Telecommunications Corporation in Harare. Built in the early 1980s at the corner of Fourth Street and Union Avenue, the high-rise was part of Zimbabwe’s post-independence building boom.

Runhare House consists of two sections, a 10 storey north facing tower and a 12 storey east wing. At the time, it was one of the few buildings in the country to have its entire water supply powered by solar powered pumps, with panels installed on its sloped north facing roof.

The building, designed by architect Fleet Utria, followed the practical but plain government style of the era. However, its unusual forecourt with collapsed Romanesque pillars (one lying dramatically on the ground) sparked jokes and made the structure a quirky architectural landmark.

Runhare House officially opened in 1984, and it stands as a reminder of Zimbabwe’s infrastructure projects during the first decade after independence.

What makes Harare so special?

It’s not just a city it’s a community with a heartbeat. A place where Ubuntu is alive in every street, every smile, every spontaneous knock on your door at 5am (yes, before you’ve even brushed your teeth or removed those eye boggers) 😂

It’s where neighbours don’t wait to be asked, they’re already rushing a pregnant mama to the hospital at midnight. No questions. Just action. That’s Harare.

Harare is not an individual experience. It’s a shared one.

Livingstone House, Harare

When it was completed in 1960, Livingstone House became Harare’s tallest building (then Salisbury), towering at 70 metres. It held this title until 1975, when Earl Grey Building (now Mukwati Building) surpassed it.

Second Tallest in Africa
At the time of its completion, Livingstone House was the second tallest building on the African continent, only behind the Sanlam Building in Cape Town (93 metres).

It was the headquarters of the Rhodesian Selection Trust (RST), a major mining group with large stakes in Zambia’s Copperbelt. The company relocated to Salisbury to be closer to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland’s centre of power. The building was named in honour of the famous explorer and missionary, David Livingstone.

Architectural Inspiration from Milan
Its modernist design was inspired by the Pirelli Tower in Milan. Architects Cathcart & Son, Creasy & Fothergill, and Dennis Lennon even consulted with Gio Ponti, the designer of the Italian skyscraper.

Livingstone House featured high speed lifts that could reach the 20th floor in just 32 seconds, a first in the Federation. The lifts were operated by touch sensitive electronic buttons, then considered revolutionary.

Built for the African Sun
Its striking brisé-soleil (sun screen wall units) made from asbestos cement triangles were designed to protect the structure from harsh sunlight while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.

Smart Urban Planning
The building also included above ground parking on its first and second floors, an uncommon feature at the time.
