Did you know Victoria Falls has an original name far more powerful than the one the world knows it by?

The indigenous Tonga and Lozi people called it Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders” — centuries before explorer David Livingstone renamed it in 1855. One look at this photograph and you’ll understand why their name captures it perfectly.

At over 1.7 kilometres wide and 108 metres tall, Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water on the planet. Its mist climbs so high it can be spotted from 50 kilometres away, feeding the lush rainforest that surrounds its banks.
