Last weekend, we enjoyed a relaxing sunset cruise on the Zambezi River courtesy of Zambezi Wilderness Safaris. The Zambezi is the 4th longest river in Africa after the Nile, Niger and the Congo. It is also the only east flowing river on the continent. The vessel we used is called Ra Ikane. It is named after the guide who led Dr. David Livingstone as he explored the region, which led to his witnessing of the mighty waterfall. The locals called it Mosi Oa Tunya, meaning the Smoke that Thunders, Dr. Livingstone then named it after Queen Victoria, hence the name today. The vessel itself is designed after the canoes used at the time.
The cruise started some 3km upstream from the Victoria Falls, traveled downstream, and went round 2 islands and traveled upstream on the Zambian side of the river.
The local name for Zambezi is Kasambabezi, which means ONLY THOSE WHO KNOW THE WATERS CAN BATHE IN THEM, we got to understand this soon enough. We saw many crocodiles either in the water or on the river bank sunset basking. We also saw many pods of hippos along the river as we enjoyed sun downer drinks of choice from the vessel, "all drinks come covered in your rate, so it was open bar for someoneš¤".
We got to relax, eat & drink, learn a bit of history and enjoyed game viewing all in one experience. Come join us experience the beauty of our land.
