In Victoria Falls, hippopotamuses sometimes leave the Zambezi River late at night to graze on grass in open areas around town and nearby lodges.
Hippos spend most of the day in water to stay cool, then after sunset they walk long distances looking for food. A single hippo can eat dozens of kilograms of grass in one night, which is why they often move through gardens, golf courses, and bushy areas near the river.
Although they may appear calm and slow, hippos are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. They are very territorial and can run surprisingly fast on land. In many safari areas across Africa, hippos are considered among the most dangerous wild animals to encounter at night.
Visitors staying in riverfront lodges around Victoria Falls are often advised:
Do not walk alone at night.
Use lodge escorts where provided.
Carry a flashlight.
If you see a hippo, keep a large distance and never block its path back to the water.
Seeing a hippo wandering quietly through the night is one of the wild and unforgettable experiences that makes Victoria Falls special.

The term “Daga Boy” (more commonly spelled “Dagga Boy”) refers to old male African buffalo bulls that have left the main herd and live either alone or in small groups of other aging bulls.
The name comes from the word “dagga,” a term used in southern Africa for thick mud or wet soil. These old buffalo bulls are famous for spending long periods wallowing in muddy waterholes and swamps to cool themselves and protect their skin from insects and the harsh African heat. After rolling in the mud, they are often seen covered in dark, caked mud — giving rise to the nickname “Dagga Boys,” meaning “mud boys.”
Unlike younger buffalo that stay with large breeding herds, Dagga Boys are older, heavier, and more battle-scarred. As they age, they become less active in breeding and gradually separate from the herd lifestyle. Many develop massive worn horns with thick bosses, torn ears, and scars from years of fighting predators and rival bulls.
Their behavior also makes them legendary among safari guides and hunters. Dagga Boys are known for being unpredictable, stubborn, and extremely dangerous when threatened. An old buffalo bull will often stand its ground instead of running away, and they have a reputation for charging suddenly if provoked or injured. Because of this, buffalo are considered one of Africa’s “Big Five” and are widely respected in the bush.
You will often find Dagga Boys resting near waterholes in places like Hwange National Park, where they spend much of the day feeding, bathing in mud, and conserving energy. Their rough appearance, solitary nature, and fearless attitude have made them one of the most iconic animals on an African safari.

The Lilac-breasted roller is one of Africa’s most striking and colorful birds, often considered a symbol of the African safari. Its beauty is impossible to ignore, with a breathtaking combination of vivid colors spread across its body.
The bird has a rich green crown and face, a white throat marked with a thin black stripe, and a stunning lilac-colored breast that gives the bird its name. Its wings are a spectacular blend of turquoise, electric blue, and deep violet, especially visible when in flight. The tail is long and elegant, with two outer feathers extending slightly beyond the rest, adding to its graceful appearance. In sunlight, the feathers appear almost iridescent, glowing brilliantly against the African landscape.
The lilac-breasted roller is known for its energetic and acrobatic behavior. It often perches high on tree branches, fence posts, or dry woodland lookouts, carefully watching the ground for insects, lizards, small rodents, or even tiny snakes. Once it spots prey, it swiftly dives down with remarkable precision.
During courtship or territorial displays, the bird performs dramatic aerial acrobatics — rolling, diving, and twisting through the sky. This rolling motion is exactly how it earned the name “roller.” The display is fast, graceful, and highly entertaining to watch.
Despite its vibrant appearance, the lilac-breasted roller is surprisingly calm while perched, often sitting still for long periods before suddenly bursting into action. Its call is a harsh, rattling sound, quite different from the elegance of its appearance.
The bird is commonly found across eastern and southern Africa, especially in open woodlands, savannahs, and safari regions such as Hwange National Park and around Victoria Falls, where it is frequently admired by visitors and photographers.
