Since the 17th century, Zanzibar became a center of power for the Omani Sultanate and flourished as a major commercial capital of the Indian Ocean.
In 1840, Sultan Said bin Sultan moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar, further elevating its global importance.

By the late 19th century, Omani influence declined, and Britain took control.
In 1890, Zanzibar became a British protectorate, while the Sultan remained as a symbolic figurehead.

On December 10, 1963, Zanzibar gained independence from Britain and became:

A powerful revolution erupted, overthrowing Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah.

This revolution was a decisive event that permanently changed the islandโs direction.

Just three months after the revolution, Zanzibar and Tanganyika signed a union agreement, forming:
