Congratulations to Tawana lodge to be recognised by the Africa International Design Awards.

The luxury Moremi lodge won for its architecture and interior design, each of which dovetails with the exquisite ecosystem in which is sits.

In care for its environment, no brick or concrete was used in the build, but sustainable timbers and locally sourced thatch were utilised. In addition, the design incorporates a curved laminated timber roof structure and mud render curved walls. The use of natural materials and placement of the lodge amongst trees minimises its visual impact and enhances the feeling that it’s part of the precious world around it.

It’s not only the environment the lodge reveres, Tawana also honours Chief Tawana Moremi the paramount chief of the Batawana tribe, whose forebears have been instrumental in conserving the wilderness of northern Botswana. Many of the design features pay homage to Chief Tawana Moremi.

Ever felt a little wistful of those intrepid adventurers who go off adventuring – sleeping wild or in a tent on the roof of their landy? In Namibia you can make this happen! There is a custom built “ Cruiser” with a romantic upper deck with a beautiful bedroom and lounger area – with a full bathroom downstairs complete with shower, flush toilet and basin. Couples are usually dropped off after the afternoon game drive for sundowners. They tuck into a decadent picnic dinner and then fall asleep beneath the stars, surrounded by the night sounds of the bush. You can find this superb camp located just outside the southern border of Volcanoes National Park and has a prime position, just a 20-minute drive from park headquarters, giving it perfect trekking access. The setting is truly dramatic, with views out towards Mount Bisoke and the range of volcanoes that surrounds you. The amazing villas are on a hillside, nestled between ancient eroded and extinct volcano cones. Bisate means ‘pieces’, which refers to the erosion of the volcanic cone on which the lodge is built. The camp is usually accessed by helicopter, with Bisate helipad just a 5-minute transfer to the lodge, or Musanze helipad around a 30 minutes’ drive away. It’s also possible to drive from Kigali, and this takes about 2 to 3 hours.
