With their rounded walls and curved roofs, the rooms or epondoks at Camp Kipwe are almost unique among Namibian lodges.

Slotted into an outcrop of boulders that are typical of Damaraland, these igloo-like rooms are designed to mitigate the extremes of Namibia's climate – albeit with a little help from air conditioning.

Rush mats line the floors, tree trunks create bedside tables, and rustic poles frame the verandas – which face west with seemingly endless views across the plains. In a camp that feels at one with the surroundings, it's fitting that the rocks sometimes butt into the open-air bathrooms as if they belonged – here providing privacy for the toilet, there a backdrop for the shower.

A tantalising rock pool benefits from the boulders, which shelter it from the harsh midday sun, while towards evening, another kopje does service as a sundowner spot. Climb up here and watch – drink in hand – as the African sun dips below the horizon.

Such is the outdoor appeal of Kipwe, it can be hard to tear yourself in for dinner, but the food – including locally grown vegetables – is worth it. And you can always finish the day around the firepit, with the stars sparkling overhead.

Give them an experience they never knew they wanted." Such were the words of the late Jack Bousfield, founder of Jack's Camp, who passed away in a tragic plane accident. His son Ralph is now very much in charge and the experience at Jack's remains unique, living up to the founding ideals.

Characterful tents on a small palm island look out over the grass and salt pans. With dark wooden floors, antique chests inlaid with brass, iron four-poster beds and silver soap dishes in the en suite bathrooms, the camp is as original as it is stylish.

The main dining and living tent has antique glass cabinets, full of stone tools, fossils and animal skeletons. There are photos of Bushmen, silver jugs of iced lime juice, and a library of books. It has the feel of a rather swanky museum.

Activities from Jack's vary enormously and are organized both by guides and researchers. There's the chance to view the shy brown hyena and curious meerkats, watch the earth's shadow grow as the sun sets over the Kalahari and lie on a salt pan watching the stars.

Kubu Island – a destination that pairs perfectly with Jack’s Camp, takes the Makgadikgadi experience to another level.

This granite extrusion island studded with baobabs, is one of the most graphically beautiful spots in Botswana and rich with intriguing detail, such as walling, trade and Bushmen beads brought here to barter in pursuit of the salt that ices the surrounding pans. Filigreed with baobab trees like fat, red ballet dancers bigger than buses, older than Christ.

The place has been the holiest secret of the Kalahari Bushmen for longer than anyone knows, a place of power and ritual. Not far away is an ancient defence fortification that was only discovered a couple of years ago. Clamber to the top for an awe-inspiring view of the enormous Sowa pan, and a picnic lunch amongst the boulders and baobabs of Kubu Island.

Good news! Airlink airline will launch the first-ever non-stop Cape Town-Zanzibar route in October 2026.

Bookings are now open for flights on the route, which will operate weekly to and from Zanzibar renowned for its spices, beaches, marine life, resorts and historical, UNESCO-listed Stone Town, which dates back hundreds of years to the island’s historical role in the spice trade.

This will be Airlink’s second route to the increasingly popular destination and follows the imminent start of its Johannesburg-Zanzibar services on 03 June 2026
