Whale Shark Spotted in Abu Dhabi

A pair of endangered whale sharks were seen swimming around the waters of Al Raha beach and were reportedly spotted to have been there for a couple of days already.

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has called on the residents to not approach the endangered species and to keep a safe distance from them, especially for boat drivers.

“Considered endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list of threatened species, whale sharks appear occasionally in the marinas and waterways of Abu Dhabi during this time of year and are not harmful," it said.

Whale sharks are the largest living species of sharks and can grow up to 12 meters and weigh as much as 40 tonnes. Despite being called a shark, they are completely harmless and only feeds on krill and plankton.

This wasn't the first time that whale sharks got too close to land. In the previous years, they were seen in the area of Saadiyat and Bateen, even by the bay where the Emirates Palace is located.
