ITALY
The chic, classy side of Milan !

Milan might have a reputation as Italy’s no-nonsense business and banking capital, but some locals still have a sense of humor. Piazza Affari, at the center of the financial district, is a knot of serious 1930s-era buildings in the heavy fascist style except for the bold modern sculpture of a 36-foot-tall, marble middle finger punctuating the middle of the square.

Although Milan was something of a cultural center during the Renaissance, the city languished during 400 years of foreign domination (Spain, Austria, France, and more Austria). The bad times finally came to an end in the 19th century, when Milan helped lead Italy to unification (risorgimento) as a modern state.

To get an idea of the rocky road to unity, take a quick 30-minute swing through the quiet, one-floor Risorgimento Museum. Paintings and displays here tell the story of the heady days from Napoleon (1796) to unification (1870). There’s not much information in English, but even without really understanding the details, just pondering the stirring paintings here makes it clear that there are Italian equivalents to our battles of Bunker Hill and Valley Forge. Italy’s heroic battles were led by patriots — Mazzini, Garibaldi, Victor Emmanuel — whose names are household words in Italy today.

4 travel essentials for any destination:

Whether you are travelling to the desert of Dubai or heading to Dallas, make sure that you carry these essentials with you, no matter what the destination.

(1) Comfortable shoes: A pair of comfortable shoes that you can walk miles in, are a must for any trip. Go in for sneakers, preferably withround bottom that aid in walking. If you feel bored to bend and tie shoelaces every time they come off, go in for the Velcro ones.

(2) Map: If you think that online social media applications and the GPS trackers are enough to find your way around the place, think again. For all you know, you might end up in a no-network zone and finding your way around your destination might get difficult. As a result, always carry a map or a guidebook of the place you are visiting.

(3) Portable charger: While carrying your cellphone and iPod chargers is a must, carrying a portable charger along has become even more necessary these days. More so because we often use our cellphone cameras to click photographs on the trip, leading the phone battery to die down quickly. At such times, a portable charger acts as a saviour, of course, only if it is charged!

(4) Duplicate documents: If you are travelling abroad, make sure you have photocopies of all your important documents that includes your passport, visa, etc. Keep them under your clothes in your bag or give them to your friend or family members, accompanying you, for safety.
