We only had 2 hours at Zaanse Schans and here’s what we’d do differently. 🇳🇱
Our first visit to Zaanse Schans was too rushed.
We had only two hours, missed the boat, and didn’t have enough time to simply enjoy the village.
Next time, we’re giving ourselves four hours starting with the boat, choosing the attractions we actually want to see, and leaving time to walk along the canals and windmills.
Sometimes, more time is the best travel tip.

What’s actually happening inside this Dutch windmill? 🇳🇱
Most visitors stop outside to take the photo. We went inside De Kat — and discovered that this isn’t simply a historic windmill sitting there for visitors.
Inside, the wind powers massive stones used to grind materials for paint.
It completely changed the way I saw this iconic Dutch landscape.

Do you have to pay to visit Zaanse Schans? 🇳🇱
We expected to pay an entrance fee when we arrived at Zaanse Schans — but we simply walked in.
You can explore the village, canals, and see the windmills from outside without paying an entrance fee.
The interesting part? Some attractions and windmills cost extra, so you can decide what you actually want to spend money on.

Our biggest mistake at Zaanse Schans

We arrived at Zaanse Schans at 10 AM thinking our guide would take care of the day.

But we hadn’t planned our own route, and by 11:30 we realized there wasn’t enough time left for the boat trip.

We had only allowed about 2 hours and 10 minutes for the whole visit.

The lesson? Plan your priorities before you arrive — especially if there’s something you really don’t want to miss.
