Internations Chinhoyi Cave Expedition Exploring the unknown depths of the Chinhoyi Caves in Zimbabwe. 200m (650ft) push. History in the ma

The Chinhoyi Caves have been dived to 108m by technical divers in the past, but they are thought to be close to 200m in depth. No one knows for sure how deep or extensive the cave system really is because vast areas remain unexplored – unseen by human eyes. All that may change this summer when a determined group of divers will push into the unknown, perhaps even reaching the bottom!

It's quite challenging to compress a busy 2-week expedition into short yet informative video, but we thought we'd give it a try. Let us know what you think. ...

We will soon have the hard drives containing the video footage and more photos from the expedition. Stay tuned!

Glenn Campbell, team leader, neatly sums up the day's findings:

"The ICCE team, while conducting a survey dive to 191mfw, has extended the known parameters of the primary cavern and also discovered a new subterranean cavern.

The primary cavern (previously surveyed by other teams) has a ceiling reaching from 108mfw to 70mfw. Its width is currently unknown but ICCE can now confirm that it certainly exceeds 100m horizontally, with a narrowing to 30m at 158mfw exactly 77m into the cavern.

At this 77m mark a sheer vertical drop to 170mfw introduces a new and previously unexplored cavern as it starts opening to as yet unknown dimensions. The topography is then stepped to 191mfw where Simon laid line for a horizontal pe*******on of 223m. The cave then continues on a gentle slope to approximately 200mfw and then starts to slope upwards."

* This photo, taken by Glenn, shows Simon as he returns from his depth and distance survey to 191mfw and re-groups with Glenn at 158mfw. The inset shows the max depth surveyed and the 459-minute dive time.

7.5 hours in the water! Night has fallen at the Sleeping Pool.

Glenn signals a victorious 'thumbs up' as he surfaces at the end of the final push dive.

Beside him is Ronald, who provided support during Glenn's ascent from the depths.

Simon is still underwater, decompressing. He has another 20 minutes to go.

Phew! Ronald had a very tiring day. Providing crucial stage support he needed to liaise extensively between the surface team and the deep divers.

The camera catches up with him here, taking a short but well-deserved break at the ICCE platform.
