Blue Eye

About 30 minutes east of Saranda is the Blue Eye. It was too cold to swim, but it was stunning. No one was there, so it was peaceful and calm. The water was stunning – the clarity and the color. It was all so inviting, I wanted to jump in even if it was freezing!

The road to get to the blue eye is a bit rough, it’s off a main road and over a bridge. It looks like there is normally a charge to cross the bridge, but since it was the off season it was fully open for us to visit.

We headed over the bridge and saw some signs indicating the area. We parked the car and walked down a dirt path, which lead to the water. The blue of the water was breathtaking. We were there on an overcast day and it was still amazing.

We walked along the water’s edge, finally arriving at the Blue Eye. The water is a different shade of blue and is bubbling.

While we were there we noticed several cabins where you can stay as well as a hut or two for food service. I’m sure it’s a very busy and popular area during the summer. I would have loved to have swam in the water, but I’m glad we got to see it with no one around.

Butrint National Park

South of Saranda is the archaeological site of Butrint. Butrint is a UNESCO site, that was inhabited from prehistoric times, including the site of a Greek colony and a Roman city. We enjoyed walking around the ruined structures, including a theatre, forum, city walls, and an old well.

You are mostly free to wonder around and view the sites. There are information boards throughout the site to learn a bit about the different areas.

Our favorite was the old well. The door to the well still has old hardware and you can see the imprints from the use of rope and buckets doing up and down the well. Buildings and structures are amazing to see, but I love the imprint of daily life – such as the rope markets from city residents getting water from the well. Incredible.

Another highlight of the site (there are a lot of highlights) was the Baptistery and its mosaic pavements. The Baptistery has several standing columns that you can view, but the best part is the mosaic pavements hidden under the gravel. You can see a picture of the mosaics on a board displayed nearby – they look amazing.

We had an AMAZING lunch at Zum Cafe in Saranda!!! I had the Caesar Sandwich and Ben had the Yogurt with seasonal fruit and a Kiwibird Lemonade. It was all sooo yummy. Looking forward to going back soon!

Throwback to our apartment renovations. We really wanted to include a nice office in our apartment. We didn't want just a desk setup in one of the bedrooms and we didn't want to use an entire bedroom for an office, so we decided to use the balcony space off the main bedroom.

We wrapped the space in windows and added a glass door. We had custom blinds made to shade the sun or completely block it out. We added an AC unit to keep the space cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

We had a custom desk built in the perfect spot to overlook the water while you work. We added monitors, keyboards, and ergo chairs for two workers. We also put in some shelves and a printer.

Throwback to our apartment renovations. We had so much fun renovating our apartment. It was a slow process (typical Albania) but we were able to customise so many aspects and work with some amazing craftsmen. We were amazed to find out the cost of the custom work. We wouldn't be able to do half of what we did here in Sydney or London.

Our kitchen is one of our favourite rooms - check out the before, during, and after pictures.

We did laugh a few times when discussing what we wanted in our kitchen! We couldn't find a double oven, so we had to just buy two separate ovens and stack them together. It took several conversations for the electrician and carpenter to understand that we were stacking two ovens and not an oven and microwave!

We didn't get a pot filler over the stove because we couldn't find the hardware!

We wanted a folding window over the sink with a counter that extends outside. It took a bit of discussing to get the window we wanted and the counter positioned correctly.

The corner pantry was also a bit of work to get right. We didn't have enough space for a walk-in pantry but could squeeze in a "step-in" pantry! Originally it was installed with a floor but we had to have it removed as we wanted to be able to step in to get to the shelves.

We also put dividers for baking trays and chopping boards above the oven and a hide drawer under the stove.

We also wanted gold trim around the cupboards. The carpenter wasn't sure how to do this, but he came up with a very clever hack and was quite pleased with himself (as he should be)!

We were told many times, jokingly, "that this is Albania" or "no more Pinterest".

It was quite the experience with language barriers and our difference in design ideas, but we are so happy with the end result.

The uphill walk home takes a few more minutes, but is a gradual slope with few steps. Its location is ideal for both long and short term stays.

The apartment is located on the 5th Road. The easiest way to find the apartment is to search for Hotel Olympia, which is next door (to the left) to the apartment building.

The hotel is a good reference for taxi drivers as well as delivery drivers.
