Save the Date, 09 February / 09 Shkurt⚡️⚡️⚡️

“Mendova të bëja një udhëtim.

Një udhëtim nëpërmjet disa imazheve fotografike, shtypur në bardhezi nga një katalog i prodhuar në Romë në vitin 1941, i bërë për qëllime turizmi, por dhe si një projekt fashist për të risjellë perandorinë…”

“I thought I’d take a trip.

A journey through several photographic images, printed in black and white from a catalog produced in Rome in 1941, made for tourism purposes, but also as a fascist project to bring back the empire…”

“Going Nowhere Slow”, both a title and a provocation, borrowed from Mikkel Krause Frantzen's book, which examines the experience of depression and the ways in which it is shaped by our contemporary condition.

THE NATIONSTATE AS INSTAGRAM

INFLUENCER / 19.54’. 2022
FREEDOM / 4.58’. 2022

The Nationstate as Instagram Influencer stitches together three different accounts of state- sponsored nationalism on the internet. A first section sees Ehrenstein and her grandparents repeating affirmations of supposed „EU values“, disseminated by EU agencies and initiatives, for example by paying young Albanians to talk about them on Instagram as something to aspire to. A second section presents a persiflage lip sync by artist Lux Venérea of Jair Bolsonaro’s anti- LGBTQI+ and anti-PT-ism propaganda spread via purchased WhatsApp chain messages. And a third section deals with the pink- and vegan-washing of the Israeli state through a travel vlog from the perspective of Jonatan Omer Mizrahi, as he travels to an ecological Israeli winery and artist residency in the occupied Westbank. Influencers are invited to share state sponsored and orchestrated holidays, promoting gay-friendlieness and ecological interests to distract from the brutal systematic oppression of Palestinians.

MY FATHER’S BOOK / 01.23’. 2023

My Father's Book video work, takes on a Russian anatomy book from my father’s library, that by profession was a doctor. The book is dissected through, altering in this way the horizontal reading experience of the pages of the dissected anatomical bodies, thus questioning the notion of modern scientific knowledge.

MELANCHOLIA / 0.43’. 2019

“Everlast” unleashes images from the recent and distant memory, insisting on a single color as the ultimate way of representation, deliberately exploring circumstantial and cinematographic references to construct stories.
Six plots with overnight drawn characters lingering in the space, moving slowly or trying to move, challenging, confronting, and trapping in order to conjure the viewer.
The third channel is related to the bride of “Melancholia”.
Melancholia was a planet. The bride was Justine. Justine was Kirsten Dunst.

THE YELLOW SHIRT ON A BROWN VELVET BLANKET / 07.59’. 2015

Adding to the suspense is the perception of time, moments, and the void after an (failed) event, Sena creates a score, a track and a timeline for the work, as one would do in music. His work has to do with how we select what to see from what we are merely looking at.

SILVA AGOSTINI
MUTAL RED / 03.45’. 2013

“Mutual Red” shows close-ups of two people whose heads are mirrored, situated on top of each other. The image remains abstract, while we perceive the weight and pressure exercised on one another. It is only after the camera moves over the first face that it becomes clear that we are experiencing a head-on-head balancing act. Through mutual sacrifice, the two characters are realizing their performance within the limits of physical possibility. Filming in close-up, the camera remains focused only on their faces throughout the duration of the video. This proximity makes their experience almost physical for the viewer. The tense images evoke an uncomfortable feeling that subconsciously links us to the conditions of our bare existence.

THE FIREFLY KEEPS FALLING AND THE SNAKE KEEPS GROWING / 11.46’. 2022

The film is inspired by an ancient fable. It was filmed at Skopje’s Central Post Office, one of the most emblematic brutalist buildings in the Balkans. Built in 1974, the structure was ravaged after a fire outbreak and UNESCO now considers it as one of the 7 most endangered buildings in the world. Developed in a collaborative process that is integral to the artist’s practice, this film was conceived and created with the students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia.

The exhibition 'Silver Lining' brings together a range of Albanian artistic voices working with film and video. The show features video works created by a selection of artists with whom bazament has had the pleasure of collaborating during its five-year of existence. These diverse body of works aim to create a space for reflection and contemplation, serving as a silver lining in our cultural, socio-political moment, which is experiencing a deep crisis on all levels. By bringing together a diverse body of works, this exhibition showcases the power of collaboration, the importance of reflection and the role that artists play in shaping our cultural and socio-political landscape.

We strongly believe in and support the role of artists as crucial social actors who, through their agency, can create new spaces where it seems there are none.
We look forward to navigate our troubled yet bright future together.

bazament 💙
