Armenian trchnagir (literally translated to “bird script”) is a type of writing, mainly capital letters, using the image of birds and other animals, plants, and even humans. In the Middle Ages, Armenian illuminated manuscripts typically began and were decorated with these beautiful and intricate letters, which are still used by modern artists in Armenia today. During your experience at our studio, you’ll have the opportunity to paint your own trchnagir letter and take it home with you, in addition to being photographed wearing one of our handmade traditional Armenian costumes. Our photo shoot experience with traditional Armenian clothing includes a masterclass in a unique type of Armenian calligraphy called trchnagir. Dating back to the middle ages, trachnagir is writing in the shape of stylized birds and other animals, plants and people. After your photo shoot wearing one of our handmade costumes, you’ll select and paint a bird-shaped letter of your choice on chiffon or silk, all while listening to traditional Armenian music. At our photo studio, located in a historic 19th century building in the heart of Gyumri, you’ll have the opportunity to browse our collection of over 20 traditional Armenian costumes, called taraz, before our team takes professional photos of you wearing your costume of choice. We’ll tell you everything there is to know about the different costumes of Armenia, along with different accessories like jewelry and props that you’ll also use in your photo shoot. Meet our founder, Hasmik. The story of our cultural house began in 2014 with Hasmik’s atelier, which to this day tailors custom clothing. A local dance and song troupe ordered custom tarazes, or Armenian national costumes, from the atelier. Hasmik and her team studied in detail historic photos of tarazes, specifically from the region of Karin, getting to know the ornaments and accessories that make traditional Armenian clothing unique. That’s how our interest in revitalizing tarazes from different regions of historic Armenia, and sharing our pieces with guests through professional photo shoots while they wear them, was born. We look forward to creating beautiful photo memories for you to take home.
