Discovering Syunik, Chapter 12: Halidzor Viewpoint

Perched high above the Vorotan gorge, Halidzor Viewpoint is where Syunik reveals its true scale.

From this breathtaking height, the landscape unfolds like a living canvas — deep emerald canyons, dramatic cliffs, and in the distance, the cabins of the Wings of Tatev gliding silently across the abyss. It is here that travelers first understand that Syunik is not merely a destination, but an experience of depth — both geographical and emotional.

The viewpoint stands near the historic village of Halidzor, a land once defended by the legendary Armenian commander David Bek. These mountains have witnessed resistance, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of a region shaped by its heights.

At sunrise, golden light gently fills the canyon. By midday, shadows carve bold contrasts into the rock walls. And at sunset, the sky ignites above the distant silhouette of Tatev Monastery, turning the horizon into poetry.

Halidzor is not just a panoramic stop.
It is a pause.
A breath between earth and sky.

Discovering Syunik, chapter 11 — Baghaberd: The Forgotten Crown of Syunik

Hidden high above the Vorotan Gorge, where the wind never truly stops and clouds drift at eye level, rise the silent remains of Baghaberd Fortress — once the last royal refuge of the Syunik Kingdom.

Unlike many Armenian fortresses that guarded roads or cities, Baghaberd guarded power itself.

Perched at nearly 1,500 meters, its position was chosen not for comfort, but for survival.

Discovering Syunik, Chapter 10: Kavart Greek Church (St. Catherine / St. Charalambos)

On the slopes of Mount Krkora near Kapan stand the remains of a little-known yet remarkable monument — the 1865 Greek church of Kavart. Built by the Greek industrialist Kondourov brothers beside the copper smelter, it once formed the spiritual center of a thriving Greek miners’ community in Syunik.

Constructed from dark tuff and basalt with refined limestone details, the domed church and its bell tower reflected both faith and craftsmanship brought here by 19th-century settlers.

Today the structure is abandoned and heavily damaged, yet it remains a silent witness to a multicultural chapter of Armenia’s industrial past — where Armenian land, Greek enterprise, and shared history met in one mountain valley.
