🇦🇲 Exploring Armenia’s Sacred Sites

📍 Khor Virap

One of Armenia’s most important religious sites, Khor Virap is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before converting King Tiridates III — leading to Armenia becoming the first Christian nation in the world in 301 AD.

✨ Bonus: It offers one of the best views of Mount Ararat 🌋, the national symbol of Armenia.

📍 Noravank

A 13th-century monastery nestled in a dramatic red rock canyon near Yeghegnadzor. Known for its beautiful architecture, especially the two-story Surb Astvatsatsin Church built by master sculptor Momik.

Known as the cultural capital of the country, Gyumri famous for its skilled artisans—blacksmiths, potters, and woodworkers—who have passed down their crafts through generations. Walking through the city's streets, visitors can discover handmade treasures in small workshops and bustling markets, reflecting the soul of Armenian heritage.

Historically, Gyumri has played a significant role in the region. It was once called Alexandropol during the Russian Empire and later Leninakan during Soviet times. The city was a key hub on the Caucasian railway and an important military center. Despite suffering heavy damage during the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, Gyumri has preserved its rich architectural legacy—19th-century stone buildings, charming balconies, and historic churches still stand as a testament to the city’s resilience and deep roots.

As the world marks the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on 24 April 2025 carried out by the Ottoman Empire, we are reminded that the protection of human rights and dignity remains a continuous struggle — one that extends into the present.

Against this backdrop, our recent panel discussion🎙️ “Displaced and Detained: Human Rights Challenges Facing Armenians from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)” shed light on the urgent challenges facing Armenians today.

Key issues explored included:
✅ The humanitarian crisis facing forcibly displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh now living in Armenia
✅ The detention of Armenian political prisoners in Baku
✅ The critical role of international human rights organisations in monitoring violations, advocating for accountability, and upholding the right to protection

As highlighted by panelists, displaced persons have the fundamental right to live in safety and dignity in their homeland. Their voices, experiences, and rights must remain central to any future efforts toward justice and peace in the region.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. phil. Tessa Hofmann, Siranush Sargsyan and Gevorg Avetikyann for their valuable contributions and advocacy for the protection of human rights and human dignity.

On this significant day, we reaffirm the importance of remembrance not only as an act of looking back — but as a call to uphold human rights wherever they are under threat.

Last year, we had the privilege of hosting a diverse group of 25 people from Germany and other nationalities living in Germany. Together, we explored different regions of Armenia, with a special focus on the south of the country. Our journey took us through breathtaking landscapes and deep into the rich history and culture of the region, especially the fascinating stories of Goris and Meghri.

We embarked on breathtaking hikes to the summits of Khustup, Aragats (Northern Summit) and Aluk, and explored stunning natural landmarks like Tsakkari Lake, Shaqi Waterfall, Trchkan Waterfall, and Lichq Waterfalls. Along the way, we discovered Armenia's ancient roots, from its pagan origins to its Christian heritage. We also immersed ourselves in the country’s culinary traditions, tasting delicious Armenian dishes and participating in a hands-on Lavash baking workshop – a true cultural experience.

Our journays were also about learning from the people and institutions shaping Armenia today. We had insightful meetings with organizations like Transparency International, Armenian Progressive Youth, and the Center for Culture and Civilization Studies. We also engaged with journalists and experts on the complex Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as youth work specialists, gaining valuable perspectives on the current socio-political landscape.

This experience was a wonderful blend of history, culture, education, and nature allowing foreigners to connect deeply with Armenia’s past, present, and future. It was an unforgettable journey that I am grateful to have been able to bring into life.

Ari Explore Armenia continues to connect Armenia and Germany through education, and we will continue organizing educational trips to raise awareness about Armenia’s history, culture, and ongoing challenges. Details for the 2025 trips will be published soon, and we look forward to sharing these enriching experiences with you!
