Why fly with Sustainable Aviation Fuel?✈️

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the first viable alternative to fossil-based jet fuel. It is the key to sustainable air travel as it can be used to power planes today without significant changes to existing infrastructure.
Compared to fossil fuels it reduces carbon emissions by at least 80%. To reduce your flight-related CO2 emissions with SAF we calculate them and deploy SAF in the respectitive amount on future Lufthansa Group flights✈️

Why does SAF reduce carbon emissions by at least 80%?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is produced in a sustainable process. There are several different eligible procedures to produce SAF. The aim of SAF is always to reuse carbon from existing sustainable biomass or gases and recycle it back into jet fuel so that fossil jet fuel refined from petroleum crude oil can be replaced.
The process is a first step towards closing the CO2 cycle: fuel is burned, but the carbon emitted is reabsorbed, e.g. through biomass, and transformed into fuel again. This way SAF saves up to 80% of CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel, which is mainly due to CO2 emissions which are generated in the production and logistics process.
To become 100% carbon neutral, the manufacturing and supply processes of alternative fuels still need to be further optimized. Research on how to neutralize emissions entirely is currently underway.

Shark in the sky: Austrian Airlines takes off with “sharkskin”

From December 2024, Austrian Airlines will be the first airline worldwide to equip its Boeing 777-200ERs with the innovative AeroSHARK surface technology. The fuselage and engine nacelles of a total of four aircraft will be coated with the sharkskin film developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF. The films significantly reduced frictional resistance lowers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption on long-haul flights.
AeroSHARK is a surface technology consisting of transparent ribs around 50 micrometers in size – the so-called riblets. It imitates the properties of a particularly aerodynamic sharkskin and thus optimizes the aerodynamics in relevant areas of the aircraft.
By applying a total of 830 square meters of riblet film per aircraft to the surface of the fuselage and engine nacelles, around 1 percent of the total fuel consumption per flight is saved. With four B777ER aircraft, the technology can achieve savings of around 2,650 tons of fuel and over 8,300 tons of CO2. This equals approximately 46 flights from Vienna to New York.
A total of 17 Lufthansa Group aircraft have already been equipped with AeroSHARK – and the number is steadily increasing. The modified fleet includes one Boeing 747-400 from Lufthansa Airlines, 12 Boeing 777-300ERs from SWISS and four Boeing 777Fs from Lufthansa Cargo. Austrian Airlines will equip four of its six Boeing 777-200ER long-haul aircraft with the surface technology from December 2024. The conversion of these aircraft should be completed by March 2025.
The “sharkskin” technology is another important building block on Austrian Airlines’ CO2 reduction path. Together with the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 30.6 % by 2030 compared to 2019.

SWISS First Lounge named World’s Best Airline Lounge for Dining for 2024

The SWISS First Lounge in Terminal E at Zurich Airport has been named the World’s Best Airline Lounge for Dining at the 2024 World Culinary Awards in Dubai. The distinction underlines the outstanding quality of the gastronomy that SWISS offers its guests in collaboration with its partner gategourmet. SWISS guests enjoy freshly prepared à la carte dining in the company’s airport lounges. Switzerland’s leading airline also puts a particular accent on regional and seasonal ingredients in its culinary offerings. And in addition to such Swiss classics as Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and fondue, SWISS Lounge guests are further treated to international dishes such as Thai curry or burgers. The range of offers is also changed every three months.

In addition to the award-winning culinary offerings of its top-calibre à la carte restaurant, the SWISS First Class Lounge in Zurich Airport’s Terminal E features a host of further standout amenities such as two hotel rooms, a conference room, mini-suites and a champagne bar. All fresh products pre-ordered, such as sandwiches, salads, bowls or cakes, are now available at a 10% discount. Onboard Delights can be pre-ordered up to 18 hours before departure on Lufthansa flights from Germany to a European destination and up to 24 hours before departure on flights from Europe to Germany.

Lufthansa Group awarded “Best Airline App 2024” worldwide

The Lufthansa Group has been awarded the prize for the world’s best airline app 2024 at the World Aviation Festival (WAF).
The Lufthansa Group app was previously evaluated by customers and nominated for the final round. A jury of experts compared the four nominees in a competition, the “Battle of the Airline Apps”, and rated the Lufthansa Group app as the best among the biggest players in the industry. The Lufthansa product came out on top against the apps from Emirates, Qatar Airways and Air India.

Dieter Vranckx, Member of the Executive Board Lufthansa Group, Global Markets & Commercial Airlines Hubs, says: “The Lufthansa Group App puts our customers at the center and provides them with user-friendly services, transparent information and support throughout their journey. Starting on September 4, as part of SWISS Taste of Switzerland, guests in SWISS First, Business and Premium Economy on long-haul fligths departing from Zurich and Geneva are offered menu creations from the canton of Aargau, created by Manuel Steigmeier, head chef of the restaurant FAHR in Künten, near Sulz.
At the young age of 22, Manuel Steigmeier became the tenant and head chef of Restaurant FAHR in Sulz, in the canton of Aargau. Seven years of dedication have earned him and his team prestigious accolades, including a Michelin star and 17 Gault Millau points. From September to November 2024, the renowned chef is now bringing his creations and philosophy to selected travel classes on SWISS long-haul flights departing from Switzerland.​
For the first course, SWISS First guests awaits a char tatar with dill mayonnaise, and a cucumber-yoghurt mousse. For the main course, Manuel Steigmeier prepared braised veal cheeks, accompanied by mascarpone polenta. Alternatively, guests can also choose the sautéed cod with chimichurri, served with creamy fregola sarda. The course is concluded with a classic chocolate financier.​
Guests in SWISS Business can start their meal with Manuel Steigmeier’s marinated salmon trout. For the main course, guests can choose between the Beef Stroganov, accompanied by spätzli, beetroot and sour cream, or a sautéed pikeperch, served with a lye bread dumpling and broccolini. The menu is rounded off with a chestnut cake, crafted with vanilla whipped cream and a mandarin-calamansi gel.​
The three-course menu in SWISS Premium Economy is also inspired by the canton of Aargau. Among others, guests can enjoy Habsburger Ritterkäse and Aarenberger, as well as a traditional carrot cake with crème diplomate for dessert.

Fin-tastic news: Austrian Airlines takes off with sharkskin
Austrian Airlines will successively equip four of its six Boeing 777-200ER long-haul aircraft with the fuel-saving sharkskin film by March 2025. This will save around one percent of the total fuel consumption per flight. At one percent, the sharkskin’s efficiency potential may not sound like much, but in total it will save thousands of tons of CO2 per year on long-haul flights.
