The African Pitta (Pitta angolensis) is one of the continent's most enigmatic bird species. It is a migratory bird, though its movements are poorly understood, and it becomes incredibly inconspicuous during the non-breeding season. So it is a bird that few birders have seen, even those with vast African experience. There are a few places where the pitta can readily be seen during the breeding season. One of these places is Angola, and the time is now! Several pairs of African Pitta are currently displaying at Santa Amboleia, and one pair is building a nest. This is a great chance for birders and photographers living in Luanda to connect with this mega bird. Santa Amboleia is only an hour away, and there are skilled local guides (Guias de Aves - Santa Amboleia, Angola) ready to assist your pitta quest.
