People ask me often about the enigma of Argentina´s political instability and economy. This video, although the narrator speaks very fast, sums up very succinctly many of the issues that have affected the country in the last century or so. Every word was chosen carefully in the script of the video to navigate the turbulent waters of interpretation of the Argentine phenomenon. For a 14-minute summary, they have done a remarkable job, and many of the people who took the tour of Jewish BA with me will recognize some of the tropes covered in it... For those who still cry for Argentina and have 14 minutes to focus intensely on it, this is a very recommended watch.

Why is Argentina always in crisis? Argentina is the 3rd largest economy in Latin America, but its economy is the most fragile of the entire American continen...

It´s been a long time since the last time I wrote a post! I am now happy to resume this activity and was prompted to do so by an NPR report that addresses in great depth the challenges faith communities face when dealing with humanitarian crises that are intertwined with political issues that divide religious congregations of all faiths and denominations. I am so proud of the work done by my friends Michael and Melissa Jacobs, who travelled from Houston to McAllen, TX with the minister and some members of their Episcopal Congregation in Houston, Christ Church Cathedral. That work is a perfect example of how to translate into reality the ideals of Liberation Theology, of which we speak at length at the beginning of our tours of Jewish Buenos Aires, when we wrestle with the question of the meaning of being Jewish in Latin America or what a Latin American form of Judaism would look like. I hope you can all enjoy this report as much as I did!

"We have to be humanitarian to each other first before we can do humanitarian work at the border," Minister Alyssa Stebbing said of her approach to keeping the peace in her congregation. "It's hard work, but it's necessary."Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to...

This is a great video that was done on the 10th Yahrezeit of Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer to honor him at B´nai Jeshurun Congregation in New York City in 2003. His love of life and of humankind and his passion for justice and peace will forever be a source of inspiration to so many people! We miss him every day of our lives!

Created by Naomi Meyer and Robert Kanter, in memory of Rabbi Marshal T. Meyer on the the 10th Anniversary of his yahrzeit. January 2004.

Last Sunday (May 19th, 2019) we had a special tour with Reuben and Deborah Bar Yadin and with Dorit and Rick Guttman, of Houston, TX, because when we were in Plaza de Mayo the Regiment of "Patricios" ("Patricians") staged a great reenactment of the events that took place in front of the Cabildo on May 25th, 1810, which started the Revolution of Argentina against Spain. I love to retell the story of the Revolution and Independence of Argentina and the 3 reasons for the Revolution to have started on that year of 1810: the French, the Spanish and the British reasons. Those who have taken the tour will know what I am talking about, and I invite them to share the reasons below... if they remember them!!! 😊

Will Durant was a great thinker and writer, who wrote in simple, clear language yet with great erudition and depth of thought about the great thinkers of the Western tradition. He was extremely skilled in presenting their ideas within the context of their lives and within the historical period in which they lived, which makes the ideas come alive. This audiobook brings orally his writings on Friedrich Nietzsche. One has to be deeply concentrated to listen word by word his exposition, as it is carefully crafted. But, if one devotes the time and the mental effort to concentrate, one will discover that Will Durant gives us an excellent introduction to the life and thought of this great thinker of the Modern times. As a bonus, towards the end of his presentation, he offer a critique of Nietzsche which is very worth listening too as well. I love Will Durant!!! I have dedicated many many hours years ago to reading his books and they contributed greatly to my understanding of World history in general and of European thought in particular. I highly recommend him!
