In 2005 Chef Mariano Gallego and Florencia D’Amico opened the gates of Brindillas, a small restaurant at their home estate in Lujan de Cuyo Wine country. After two decades of being Mendoza´s best kept secret, the Michelin star awarded to the restaurant in 2023 did not alter the unpretentious philosophy of this hidden gem.

There is no better way to get to the heart of any city than through its cuisine. And that means not just eating, but shopping for it and cooking it.

Susana Balbo´s Dominio del Plata winery provides a homely experience, in which the chef is inspired by some of the country`s most traditional fire technics for cooking. The goal, is to learn different methods of cooking with fire: grill, wood oven, steal pan, iron cauldron, direct flame and wire. The class also includes the symbolic experience of the Mate, Argentinian traditional infusion, with its respective language and tradition.

Speakeasy, hidden bars of Buenos Aires

It is a global trend that also exists in the Buenos Aires night. They work behind closed doors, offer premium cocktails and a restricted environment.
While it is a trend that stomps, it is nothing new. Bars are called "Speakeasy" and the term was originated in the early twentieth century, in the cosmopolitan city of New York. At such times, throughout the city, ruled the dry law, a controversial measure that prevented the manufacture and consumption of alcohol.
Using customer loyalty as the main bastion, the bars were true secret communities where customers themselves were responsible for inviting new friends to join the mystery. “The idea for admission was never restrictive or discriminatory, but a game where you have to have the data or address” …Some of them require a password to enter (that can change every week); others are camouflaged by a fake facade (like the Atlantic Flower shop, or Frank’s, where you enter through a phone booth). In the last decade in Buenos Aires a revival of this modality arose, maybe to contrast with a trend of too much display, and the "window" bars and restaurants of the previous decade.
A differential factor when comparing with a traditional bar is the bartending. If anything defines these redoubts is their premium bar with author proposals and classic drinks of high quality
(When challenging 2020 arrived, heavy commercial restrictions were imposed in B.A Argentina, and re-invention was at hand for a business already defined by Innovators… Premium drinks were then delivered in jars with addendum notes for proper ways to serve them).

History of a Wine: Mendel Semillón

Following on our series of ARGENTINA'S TOP WINE MAKERS, we asked ROBERTO DE LA MOTA, from Mendel Wines ( ), if he was able to recall any special moment in the life of the winery that he could share with us and he gladly provided us with an anecdote about the creation of Mendel´s superb Semillón and it goes back to 2009, when the winery was about to embark in its first ever harvest of Semillón and the potential buyer of the grape communicated Roberto that he would not be buying from them during that year. That announcement, in Robertó´s own words “woke up the desire of making a Semillón wine, as the one I had elaborated with my father (*) during the 80´s ”.We decided then to elaborate this wine pressing entire clusters at the firm´s small pneumatic press. After the first pressing though, we found a minor obstacle in the capacity of the steel tanks, which pointed us into fermenting the rest of the wine in small barrels of French oak …” This change of direction originated the renowned Mendel Semillón ( 15 to 20 % macerated in French Oak, then leaving this wine in the barrels for 6 months)”
Roberto recalls on the standing reception the wine got “… this was the first wine we sold before even been bottled! “ and he further explains “ …Toby Morhall, buyer from the Wine society, the world´s oldest Wine Club, was marveled by the wine´s fruitfulness, elegance and long finish, which reminded him of the Semillons produced in Australiá´s Hunter Valley, and seeing the small production we had, he proposed to buy from us half of our production. From that moment on, our Semillon is part of the prestigious British Wine Club´s portfolio”.

Argentina´s Top Winemakers
Mendoza´s Masters of innovation:
Laureano Gomez achieved early recognition as head winemaker of Salentein and Trapiche, two of the country´s wineries with large international projection, and over a decade ago he decided to focus all of his expertise into his own family Estate. His wisdom has taken him to personally cultivate for over 20 years, a small parcel of Pinot noir ( a rarity in Mendoza, by all means the land of mighty Malbecs). As a result of his passion, Pinots of exceeding quality and superb typicity are seeing the light at the family estate, and by doing so, broadening the palette of top wine experiences east of the Andes. A visit to Laureano´s winery will always grant a first-hand encounter with his family and their passion for wine.
