Welcome to Between the Ears Expeditions!

We are the founders, Amelia and Lauren, and we began building Between the Ears after our own long ride in Argentina. It was the one of the best times of our lives and left us wanting more.

With backgrounds in conservation, education, and horses, and having collectively worked in South America, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia, we pulled together our past experiences and passions to create expeditions that make us feel truly alive.

We started this community to bring people together who want the same thing — the thrill of the wilderness, the partnership of exploring on horseback, and connection with people you meet along the way.

Western Mongolia feels like a juxtaposition of all things: it is vast, harsh, and rugged, but made warm and welcoming by the kindness of the people who call it home. The landscape feels like there is both nothing and everything in all directions. The horses are physically unchanged over centuries, still similar looking to their wild counterparts, yet they’re steady, reliable, and more than eager to do any job they’re asked.

Mongolia is said to be a place born on horseback, so there was no better way to explore it. We packed camels the Mongol way, slept next to rivers that have carved mountains in to valleys for millennia, and drank tea with people who have lived nomadically for generations. Reliant on the land but also tied to nothing.

It seems impossible to sum up a glimpse into the life of people who have been living like this for so long, but one of our guides did a pretty good job capturing it: ‘When you’re a nomad you don’t belong anywhere, so you belong exactly where you are.’

KYRGYZSTAN WINTER EXPEDITION ~ February 26 - March 6, 2027 🇰🇬❄️

9 days || 9 nights || 6 riding days

You asked and we answered. Bringing you Kyrgyzstan in its wildest and rawest form. Stripped bare of other tourism, this trip makes way for truly immersive and cultural travel. Horses, as always, are at the core. DETAILS BELOW (for intermediate riders and above).

In winter, vast valleys dotted with small villages fill with snow but life carries on. Shepherds move their yaks, communities play kok boru, and markets host a lively shuffle of livestock with breath steaming in the cold.

From the village, we travel to a high mountain camp near the border with China. Joining our local host in his rustic winter home, we ride to check on yaks and explore the alpine lake, Köl Suu, all while surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.

Although extremely rare to see, these remote mountains are home to wolves, brown bears, and snow leopards. It’s a distant corner of the world, reverberating in the solitude of winter with the wildness that still survives here.

Later, we travel to Issyk Kul, to an area renowned for its eagle hunting tradition. Winter is a special time to experience this centuries-old practice. In spring and summer, while wildlife raise their young, eagles train in town. But in winter, hunters take their birds into the mountain for real hunting.

Enjoy cultural “masterclasses” throughout the trip. Accommodation is shared in guesthouses, shepherd’s homes, and hotels.

This trip is as real as it gets - hardy mountain ponies, local families, schedules following the whimsy of winter weather, and a true taste of another way of life.
