The Limay River rises in Lake Nahuel Huapi and forms the largest basin in Patagonia, measuring 435 kilometers in length. It originates in a transition zone between forests and steppe.
Limay means "clear water" in the local language. It is a fast-flowing river, with numerous branches and islands, ranging from deep pools to fast-flowing, shallow waters. The banks are covered with willows, making it difficult to wade. Large migratory brown trout come from the large lake, where, after feeding on pancoras (a type of freshwater crab), they grow enormous! This brown trout can easily weigh 4.5 kg, but each season we catch a giant brown trout weighing 7 kg. The best fishing is usually in the area between "La Boca" and Rincón Chico, the first 8 kilometers of the Limay. The best time to find these huge brown trout in the river is late in the season, in March and April, when they begin migrating to the rivers in search of schools of spoonbills.
