🔬 Science up close — a moment of precision and purpose

This close-up shows a humpback whale moments after receiving a scientific tag, carefully deployed by the California Ocean Alliance research team during our 2025 Collaborative Antarctic Cetacean Research Expedition with the University of Santa Cruz, Duke, Miami, Stanford and Berkeley.

Each tag helps scientists understand how whales behave, dive, feed, and navigate in the icy Antarctic environment — data that’s essential to protecting these magnificent animals and their fragile ecosystem.

This expedition, the largest privately funded whale research mission ever conducted in Antarctica, brought together researchers from multiple universities and the Consulting Antarctica | Spirit of Sydney Expeditions operational team, with Darrel Day serving as Expedition Leader.

Every sample, every tag, and every observation helps us move one step closer to understanding the complex life beneath the surface. 💙

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear friend and esteemed kayak guide, Natalie Gillis. Natalie was a remarkable individual who enriched our adventures in Antarctica with her expertise and passion. Not only was she an exceptional kayak guide, but she was also a highly skilled polar aircraft pilot, talented photographer, and gifted writer.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. Natalie will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. We honor her memory and celebrate her extraordinary life.
