We experienced an Almabtrieb today, and between the decorated cows, traditional music, tractors and celebrations, I spotted these.

I knew I had seen them before… but realized I actually knew nothing about them.

So before I Google it, I’m asking you:

Your first 🇦🇹 Austria trip shouldn’t just be a collection of famous places.

Especially if you’re traveling in September.

If your route already includes Salzburg + the Salzkammergut, you’re in a perfect position to experience very different sides of Austria without constantly changing hotels.

And this is where I think many itineraries go wrong: people plan around places and forget to plan around experiences.

September is a perfect example.

This is when Almabtrieb season begins in many Alpine regions, with cows returning from their summer pastures decorated with flowers and bells. Depending on the village, you’ll also find local food, traditional music, markets and plenty of Tracht. 🐄🌸🔔

It’s the kind of experience I’d happily build an itinerary around rather than squeezing in another famous town just because it’s on everyone’s list.

So when you’re planning Austria, don’t only ask:

What places should I visit?

Also ask:

What can I experience while I’m there?

That’s usually where the best trips begin.

Famous for its massive, breathtaking golden Benedictine Abbey overlooking the Danube River, just 1 hour away

📍Semmering (Hirschenkogel)
Incredible mountain views and hikes along a UNESCO World Heritage railway route, only 1 hour and 15 minutes away.

Same country. Completely different trip. 🇦🇹

That’s one of the biggest things people underestimate when planning Austria.

The place I’d recommend in July might NOT be the place I’d send you in October.

Some destinations come alive when the lakes are warm. Others are at their best covered in snow, surrounded by autumn colors, or when spring finally reaches the valleys.

So don’t just ask:
Where should I go in Austria?

Ask:
Where should I go in Austria when I’m actually visiting?

That one question can completely change your itinerary.
