⬇️ Here are few locations and fascinating stories hiding right above your head.
One of my favorite things about Graz is that even an ordinary walk through the Old Town can turn into a little treasure hunt.
📍 1. The Glockenspiel | Glockenspielplatz 4
See that little tower above the rooftops? It’s home to Graz’s famous Glockenspiel! Since 1905, its bells have entertained visitors, and today you can watch the dancing figures appear at 11 AM, 3 PM and 6 PM.
📍 2. The Unknown Knight | Landeszeughaus, Herrengasse 16
Yes, there’s a man lying on the roof! 😂
But he’s actually an artwork by Nasan Tur from 2011, challenging the traditional image of brave, heroic soldiers.
📍 3. The mysterious Ottoman warrior | Palais Saurau, Sporgasse 25
Why is there a man holding a sword sticking out of a building?
Nobody knows his exact original purpose! The figure has inspired legends for generations, and the one you see today is actually a copy. The original is preserved at Graz Museum.
📍 4. The little elephant | Neue-Welt-Gasse 3
An elephant in the middle of Graz? 🐘
Back in 1629, a real elephant was exhibited in the city, causing quite a sensation! The sculpture recalls an old inn called “Der kleine Elefant”.
📍 5. The hidden faces | Luegghaus, Hauptplatz 12
This might be my favorite!
Look carefully at the beautiful decorations on the building above Swarovski. Among the flowers and fruit, you’ll discover little faces, noses and mouths hiding in plain sight.
📍 6. The streetlights on the wall | Tummelplatz
Three streetlights attached to a building?
That’s actually an artwork by Manfred Erjautz called Skulpturale Akupunktur, created in 2017 using discarded streetlights.
And yes, they even light up at night!
✨ The best part? These are only a few of the details hiding around Graz’s Old Town.
