Well... I made it back! 😄

This photo pretty much sums up an unforgettable few weeks in Tanzania and Rwanda. In the picture, I'm wearing a mask, but trust me, there was a VERY big smile underneath it (most of the time) as I sat just metres away from a mountain gorilla family in Rwanda's Virunga Mountains. Mum, youngsters, teenagers, other adults and the mighty silverback were all there. A genuine bucket-list moment. 📸

The trip delivered more than I could have imagined – incredible wildlife, the Great Migration unfolding in the Serengeti, a breathtaking balloon flight at sunrise, lion kills, a bluff elephant charge, and finally seeing cheetahs in the wild for the first time despite previous trips to Africa ... 3 magnificent brothers! 🐘🦁🐆

Just as memorable were the people. Fantastic guides and drivers, a fun group of fellow travellers, and a special shout-out to my gorilla-trekking travel buddy, Renee, who helped make the Rwanda adventure even more memorable.

Rwanda also left a lasting impression. Visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial was a powerful and humbling experience, reminding me of the resilience and warmth of the people I met throughout the journey.

I'm now home, sorting through thousands of photos, trying to convince my body that Adelaide time is the correct time zone, and getting ready to be back on deck from 9:30am Monday.

If you like flora and not just the idea of African fauna, please read on and take a peek at the diversity of plants I've discovered in both Tanzania and Rwanda. Please don't ask me what they are or if they're native to the region, but for me I've found myself drawn to a part of these two diversely different countries that are quite removed from the culture, people and wildlife. There's also a personal connection which was special for me.

​For me personally, I quickly learned to appreciate the people, culture, history, and diversity of both Tanzania and Rwanda on my incredible trip to a world of unbelievable wonders and surprises. 🇦🇫🇹🇿

​But the vistas—with or without wildlife—and the fact that I was so drawn to the flora of these incredibly diverse countries came as quite a surprise! I'm no expert on flora (or fauna, for that matter), but it wouldn't be fair if I didn't showcase some (too many) of the beautiful plants that I encountered during my travels.

​Colourful, even if dry. Bold, even if struggling. Dynamic in diversity. 🌾✨

​One plant that truly stood out to me was the Lion'sTail, which is native to Africa. Although mostly not in bloom right now and largely considered a w**d over there, every single time I saw one, it instantly reminded me of my father. He loved this bright orange flowering plant and had one in his yard. Seeing them along the way felt like a gentle reminder that he was right there, present with me on this journey. 🧡🦁
