Long-nosed Fur Seal Flipper Sailing & Resting! 🦭⛵️🤿

On especially lucky days during our Wild Dolphin Tour, we get to encounter more than one type of marine mammal. Pictured here is the Long-nosed Fur Seal.

Approximately 83% of the Long-nosed Fur Seals in Australia live here in South Australia! (DEW). This seal is often mistaken for the Australian Fur Seal and was only recently named the Long-nosed Fur Seal, rather than the New Zealand Fur Seal, due to the large populations inhabiting Australian waters (with an estimated population of 100,000). They can be distinguished from the Australian Fur Seal by being slightly smaller, much darker in coloration, and having differences in head shape, whiskers, posture, locomotion, and vocalizations.
In these first photos, you can see the seal extending its front flipper and tail into the air while balancing on its side. This behavior is part of thermoregulation, which helps them maintain their core temperature and is also known as ‘flipper sailing.’ Fur seals are sensitive to heat, so when the temperature is too warm, they thermoregulate by floating in the water and raising their flippers out of the water to control blood flow to their extremities. They can stay in this position for hours!
In the second set of photos, you can see a seal resting on the rocks. After foraging at sea for around 7-10 days, they return to their colony or resting grounds to rest for about 2-3 days straight.

We are beyond excited to announce the arrival of these adorable newborn Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins, spotted during our Wild Dolphin Tour! 🐬🐬🐬

Among them are the calves of our two ID individuals, Luna and Two-Fins, whom we were fortunate enough to see numerous times throughout their pregnancies. The calves in these photos are between 2 weeks and 2 months old and all appear to be thriving. Some still have very prominent fetal folds from being curled up in utero.

We are incredibly grateful to have earned the trust of these mothers, approaching us with their little calves and allowing us to share such a precious moment. It’s something we will never take for granted.

It typically takes around 6 months for a calf to become a proficient and confident swimmer, learning through a combination of practice, observation, and interaction with their mothers. While navigating our surrounding waters, make sure to reduce speeds and stay nice and vigilant for the safety of our resident dolphins and their young calves.

We received such positive feedback on our initial newborn facts post! Let us know if you have any questions or if there’s more you’d like to learn about our new arrivals, the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose calves!

Where it all started!

Temptation was designed and built by owner/operator Stephen Waites to do snorkeling trips out to the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. It was being built at the same time as Marina Pier was being developed.

When completed Temptation was put into the new marina as the only operating charter vessel.

Temptation went out on daily cruises which over time gave the local dolphins a bit of fun and safety. In April 2001 a young dolphin with its mother made Marina Pier its safe haven. This dolphin which was named Jade, after Stephen’s daughter, became a large draw card for Temptation and the restaurants in the precinct. In a short time Jade began swimming with Jade and then the ball began to roll.
