Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute acknowledge with deep sadness the passing of Professor Peter Buckskin, a proud Aboriginal leader, educator, advocate, and visionary whose life’s work helped shape a stronger and more inclusive Australia.

Professor Buckskin dedicated his life to advancing understanding, respect, and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories, and knowledge systems. Through his leadership across education, community development, cultural advocacy, and public life, he challenged institutions and communities to walk together with greater honesty, compassion, and purpose.

He believed deeply in the power of education and dialogue to create meaningful change, and consistently championed a society where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures were not only acknowledged, but genuinely embraced as central to the identity and future of the nation. His work inspired generations of leaders, educators, students, and communities to think differently, act respectfully, and strive for equity and reconciliation.

Professor Buckskin’s legacy will endure through the countless lives he impacted, the pathways he created, and the vision he carried for a more united and culturally respectful Australia.

The Tandanya board and management extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those who were privileged to walk alongside him.

A big congratulations to Zaachariaha Fielding for winning the 2026 National NAIDOC Week Poster Competition.👏🏾

Zaachariaha Fielding is a proud Yankunytjatjara person from the APY Lands in South Australia and is widely recognised as one of the country’s leading contemporary Aboriginal artists and musicians.

Known internationally through the acclaimed music duo Electric Fields, Zaachariaha's work brings together language, sound, visual storytelling and culture in deeply powerful and contemporary ways.

The winning poster design titled Paralpi reflects movement, energy and continuity, carrying the stories of Ancestors forward while celebrating the creativity and cultural power of the next generation. Rich in colour and symbolism, the artwork speaks to the enduring strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the past 50 years of NAIDOC and beyond.

Through this work, Zaachariaha honours the resilience of community, the importance of language and identity, and the ongoing cultural renaissance being led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the country and in particular the APY Lands.
