💬 The Australian Government is exploring how new options for Aviation Disability Standards could improve air travel and make the whole journey more accessible for people with disability.

📋 People with disability can do a survey on how new standards could make air travel better.

How Fiji’s new Tourism Services Tax may impact you

The Fijian Government has just announced a new tax on travel and tourism in Fiji. It came with almost no warning, and it may affect your trip. Here's what we know so far.

What's happening

Fiji has introduced a new Tourism Services Tax of 5% from September 1, 2026.

Travel businesses in Australia were not consulted, and we are still working through exactly how it applies.

The Fijian Government requires the collection of this tax on almost all travel and related services regardless of whether you have already paid for your booking in full or not.

What this means for you

Already booked and paid? The Fijian Government has advised this tax could apply to your booking, even though you booked and paid before the tax was ever announced.

Following Industry consultation by our peak industry body, the Australian Travel Industry Association, we have been advised:

Bookings BEFORE 1 September 2026: Once you’re in Fiji, you may be asked by a supplier to pay additional money for the Tourism Services Tax (similar to a resort tax in the USA).

This fee will not be more than 5% of the booking price. Please know that this is not money you have already paid to us.

Bookings AFTER 1 September 2026: Any tax that applies to your trip will be include d in your price when you book and pay, so you should not be asked for additional money to cover this tax.

What we do know

We are working through exactly how this affects your booking, and we won't leave
you to sort it out alone.

Nothing. There is nothing you need to do at this stage. If anything changes that affects your booking, we will contact you directly.

We're sharing an important announcement from the Australian Travel Industry Association's CEO, Dean Long. This message was posted on Tuesday in response to incorrect media reporting on the conflict in the Middle East earlier that day.

ATIA advises that...

"Travellers should not cancel bookings based on headlines or speculation. If your flight is affected, airlines will provide rebooking or refund options. Cancelling yourself may remove these rights.

If you are due to travel in the coming days or weeks:

▪Download your airline’s app and check the Manage My Booking section before heading to the airport
▪Monitor messages from your airline regarding schedule changes
▪Follow official government travel advice

If you are travelling in the coming months:

Travellers with bookings in the coming months should know that alternative routes are available and airlines are actively adapting flight paths where required. If you have concerns about your itinerary, speak with your accredited travel agent or tour operator, who can help assess options and provide up-to-date advice tailored to your trip."

Know before you go...

It's not just New Zealand introducing the new digital New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). Australia is also rolling out the equivalent - the Australia Travel Declaration (ATD).

Information from the Australian Border Force (ABF)

"The Australia Travel Declaration (ATD) will be introduced at all international airports and seaports before the end of 2027, with the Australian Border Force (ABF) embracing digital credentials and phasing out the paper-based incoming passenger card.

Since October 2024, the ABF in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF), and Qantas have been rolling out a pilot in-app capability of the ATD, allowing passengers to pre-fill their digital passenger card up to 72-hours ahead of travel to Australia.

The current pilot program will be rolled out across inbound international Qantas flights at remaining capital cities – including Perth and Adelaide – before the end of 2026.

The national rollout of the ATD will reduce manual processes for passengers, enable for secure and pre-vetted digital collection of information, allow for prompt updates to questions and management of global biosecurity risks, and meet passenger expectations for a digital process."
