The Australian Border Force (ABF) recently conducted a three-day compliance operation in Far North Queensland, focusing on the Cairns region’s personal services and hospitality sectors. The initiative aimed to protect migrant workers from exploitation and ensure employer adherence to immigration laws.

Key Outcomes:
• Business Inspections: Over 20 businesses were visited, revealing several visa violations and instances of worker exploitation.
• Unauthorized Employment: Three individuals without legal work rights were found employed—and in some cases residing—at these workplaces. Two were granted bridging visas to facilitate voluntary departure, while the third is on a removal pathway.
• Employer Consequences: Businesses found in violation may face significant penalties under the Migration Act, including compliance notices, enforceable undertakings, increased fines, civil or criminal prosecution, and potential prohibition from employing migrant workers.

Superintendent Melati Smith emphasized the ABF’s dual approach: strict enforcement against non-compliant employers and compassionate engagement with exploited individuals. She also highlighted the importance of employers verifying work rights through the Home Affairs’ Visa Entitlement Verification Online system to prevent unintentional illegal employment.

The operation underscores the ABF’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable workers and maintaining the integrity of Australia’s immigration system.

📣 Big News for 457/482 Visa Holders on Bridging Visas!
Department Clarifies How Bridging Visa Time Can Count Towards PR (ENS 186 TRT)

Great news from the Department of Home Affairs! It has been officially confirmed that time spent on a Bridging Visa (BV) can now count toward the required work experience for a Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) visa — under certain conditions. 🧑‍💼🗂️

🔍 What Counts?
✅ BV time after a 457 or 482 was granted, when:
You're waiting on a decision for a new 482 in the same occupation, OR
You’ve lodged a 186 TRT application that is later withdrawn.

🚫 What Doesn’t Count?
BV time before your first 482 is granted.
BV while waiting on a 482 in a different/new occupation — this only counts after the new visa is granted.

📝 The Department is currently updating the policy to reflect this change.

👉 If you’re unsure whether your bridging visa time qualifies or how this impacts your ENS 186 TRT eligibility, book a consultation with one of our expert registered migration agents today!

🚨Important Update for Employers: Skilled Visa Income Thresholds Increasing from 1 July 2025🚨

Starting 1 July 2025, the Australian Government will implement a 4.6% increase in income thresholds for several skilled visa categories, aligning with the national Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings (AWOTE).

Key Changes:
Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT): Increasing from $73,150 to $76,515
Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT): Increasing from $135,000 to $141,210
Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT): Increasing from $73,150 to $76,515

These changes will affect new nomination applications for visas such as:
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)
Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494)

What This Means for You:
If you're planning to nominate a skilled worker, lodging your application before 1 July 2025 may allow you to proceed under the current income thresholds. Given that the nomination application process typically requires at least 30 days, it's crucial to act promptly to ensure your application is submitted in time.

🚨 Skilled Visa Income Thresholds Increasing from 1 July 2025 🚨

The Australian Government has announced a 4.6% increase to skilled visa income thresholds, effective 1 July 2025. This change aligns with national wage trends (AWOTE) and is aimed at ensuring overseas workers are paid fairly.

🔹 What’s Changing?
📌 Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT)
➡️ Increasing from AUD $73,150 to AUD $76,515
💼 Applies to:
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) – Core Skills stream
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

📌 Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT)
➡️ Increasing from AUD $135,000 to AUD $141,210
💼 Applies to:
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) – Specialist Skills stream

📌 Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
➡️ Increasing from AUD $73,150 to AUD $76,515
💼 Applies to:
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494)
Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)
(Subject to approval of relevant legislation)

📌 What is the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR)?
The AMSR reflects what an Australian worker would earn in the same position and location. Employers must pay whichever is higher—the new income threshold or the AMSR—to ensure migrant workers are not underpaid compared to locals.

✅ New thresholds apply to nomination applications lodged on or after 1 July 2025
❌ Existing visa holders and applications lodged before 1 July 2025 are not affected
