Adelaide Gaol offers Guided History Tours either during the day or evening.

✅ We can tailor your tour to include morning or afternoon tea, a lecture on the history of the Gaol or specific aspects of the Adelaide Gaol site.
✅ Please note that we have a minimum of 10 people per guided History Tour.
✅ History Tours are usually about 90 minutes in duration although this can be adjusted depending on your requirements.
✅ They are suitable for all ages.
✅ Even though we accept a maximum of 30 persons per standard tour we are able to handle larger numbers.
✅ Price is $25 per person. $18 per child under 12 years. Children under 2 = free entry.

The Adelaide Gaol was built in 1841. It housed approximately 300,000 prisoners during its 147 years of operation. These prisoners consisted of men, women, and children. It also housed those unfortunates who were referred to at the time, as lunatics. The Gaol was closed in 1988 and is known as the longest continuously operating prison in Australia.

The Adelaide Gaol is one of the two oldest remaining public buildings in South Australia. The other is the Government House which was built at the same time as the Gaol.

One of the most common reasons why people believe Friday the 13th is unlucky is because of the biblical story of the Last Supper. In this story, there were 13 people at the table, including Jesus and his 12 apostles. The 13th guest was Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. The Adelaide Gaol is looking for volunteers to lead tours of this fascinating and historic site.

As a tour guide, you'll be sharing the stories of the people who lived and worked at the gaol, from the convicts and prisoners to the wardens and staff. You'll also get to learn about the gaol's history and architecture, and you'll be able to share your knowledge with visitors from all over the world.

Volunteering at the Adelaide Gaol is a fun and rewarding experience. It's a great way to learn more about South Australian history and culture, and it's a chance to meet new people and make a difference in your community.

You'll have a lot of fun!
