We have a special shout-out post for you tonight ๐Ÿ˜‰

Many of you would know our Walk Leader, Bea. She's been with Big Heart since the beginning and rejoined us this year after spending the last year or so living and working in Europe.

Well, Bea is working on a very worthwhile project and we want to help her spread the word! Next month, she's setting off to run and ride the Heysen and Mawson trails to raise money for Conservation SA. This distance is no small feat!

Bea will be covering 1,100km, moving through 10 different national parks and conservation reserves. She'll also be joined by a bunch of local legends doing amazing work to protect and restore our beautiful environment and drive climate action. This adventure showcases the beauty of our wild places in S.A. and highlights the inspiring work being done to protect them.

If you'd like to support Bea's fundraising efforts and find out more info, check out this link: https://www.conservationsa.org.au/running-out-of-time.

You can follow along on Bea's adventure via Instagram

The wet weather gear came out for these champions who braved the weekend rain to join Monty for a training walk.

They walked 10km around Anstey Hill Recreation Park with a slight re-route due to parts of the trail being underwater!

A kind passing walker pointed out three Tawny Frog Mouth owls huddled on a branch - gosh they are masters of camoflage, it's always such a thrill to see them! Lots of quality conversation was had and the excitement is building for their upcoming departures!! ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅพ

Have you ever heard the term parahippocampal gyrus?

It's the part of our brain that allows us to navigate the world. And, the parahippocampal gyrus area may shrink when it's not exercised!
As the saying goes... "If you don't use it, you lose it."

Thanks to our Walk Leader and Nav Skills Workshop facilitator, Rod, for bringing this ABC News article to our attention.

It's a worthwhile read for everyone, especially in this tech-heavy world!

Walking SA's Executive Director and Big Heart LEGEND, Rod, is an absolute champion in teaching, communicating, and supporting navigators from basic beginner skills to more advanced techniques. We work with Rod to offer you the only full-day nav courses currently on offer in South Australia.

So, have a read of the article and, if you're feeling like it's time to boost your non-tech-reliant navigation skills, book yourself into our Navigation Skills Workshop on 16th August or 13th September.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-29/phone-navigation-could-be-affecting-memory/13275636

More info on our Workshop is here:

Psychologists say using your phone to find your way around is probably affecting your memory, but a niche sport could help you use it so you don't lose it.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia's Park of the Month is typically dedicated to celebrating nature and the exceptional parks found throughout South Australia.

Coming up throughout August is something a little different, but oh so valuable!!! And we are so happy that next month is about celebrating VOLUNTEERS IN PARKS! ๐ŸŒฟ

Volunteers are the unsung heroes ๐Ÿ™ They are regular people like you and me who give one of life's greatest assets - time and energy! Volunteers maintain trails, help to control weeds and erradicate pests, assist with re-vegetation projects, contribute to community initiatives, and so much more.

There are many Park volunteer groups spread across SA, and help is needed in a variety of areas. If you're eager to learn how you can become involved, check out the info here https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/volunteer

Let's all celebrate and support Volunteers in Parks throughout August by joining one of the free events happening throughout the month.
