This mornings cruises we had a whale breaching and head lunging close enough for passengers to get good pictures however it was a bit choppy out on the line. We left these whales as they continued west and headed towards the north side of Breaksea Island. No Humpbacks traveling between the Islands so we continue to Nanarup Beach hoping to find a couple of Southern Right whales in the area.
We head out at 1pm with our afternoon cruise and this time because of the number of children aboard we stay in calmer waters of King Gorge Sound and with no luck finding whales in Frenchman Bay again we make our way to the north side of Breaksea Island. After checking out the New Zealand fur seals I spot blows and breaches east of our position. Still we are protected by the island enough to find a Southern Right whale that is traveling west towards us and breaching as it does. When it turns and heads to travel south of Breaksea we leave and head towards Goode Beach. As we are cruising west I spot blows over towards Michaelmas Island. We find a very small Humpback calf that is happy to do head lunges several times close to the boat. We follow to the western end of the islands then leave mother and baby on their journey.
