After a weekend of strong winds we head out and find several small Humpback Whales cruising past one of the ships at anchor on the south side of King George Sound. We left these small quiet whales and head out towards "The Line" Blows were had to see at the start but after spotting whales heading west around Bauld Head we started to see blows pop up all around us. As we do, we try and go to as many pods as possible to do a head count.
We find 2 pods with 4 small Humpbacks cruising west. The first pod split into pairs we followed one pair for a little while then over to a couple heading out of KGS. One small whale comes in and joins the pair. We then find the second pod of 4, they are traveling slower chasing each other around at times under the boat.

An exciting new collaboration between South Coast Natural Resource Management, South Coast Cetaceans, Oceans Blueprint, Albany Ocean Adventures, King George Sound Safariand Albany Whale Tours was launched in Albany on Thursday 1 August…🐳 …

… we excited to announce the start of the Right Whale Tracker project which will be coordinated by Laura Bird from South Coast Natural Resource Management.

This project will gather important information on the distribution and abundance of southern right whale by improving the capability of the community to monitor this species along the south coast from Albany to Hopetoun. This project aims to fill critical knowledge gaps to help conserve the species and empower the community to engage directly in conservation-based management actions.

The Right Whale Tracker Project provides an exciting opportunity for the community to get involved in monitoring one of our most majestic threatened species! If you love taking photos of whales and would like to learn more about how to become a Right Whale Tracker citizen scientist, make sure you register on the My Impact online platform and attend the introduction workshop on 21st August in Albany and 4th September in Hopetoun.
