Built in 1884, the former Waterstreet's Hotel is one of Albury's finest surviving examples of a late colonial country hotel.
Originally known as the Commercial Hotel, the grand two-storey building was designed by local architects Gordon & Gordon for Mrs Jane Pool. Thanks to its location near the railway station, it quickly became a popular stop for travellers, railway workers and visitors arriving in Albury.
Think quarantine hotels are a modern thing? Think again. During the 1919 Spanish Flu outbreak, the hotel took on a very different role, serving as a quarantine facility for women and children entering Albury from Victoria. Those arriving were required to stay here for a week, with a police officer stationed at the front door.
Today, while no longer operating as a hotel, the building remains a prominent part of Albury's streetscape and a reminder of the city's rich history.
