Visit Central Australia

Visit Central Australia The official tourism office for Central Australia, the 'Red Centre'. The Red Centre is different. Out there it is a bit, ‘out there’. In a good way.

In a more interesting way. Because let’s face it, who wants just the same old boring stuff on holidays? When you get to the Red Centre, you’ll feel like you’ve arrived in a different country, on a different planet even. A place where you will find the desert bursting to life.

A little Larapinta inspiration for your feed. 🥾🌄

As temperatures rise, the long-distance hiking season on the Larapinta Trail begins to wind down — making now the perfect time to reminisce, admire the scenery and start dreaming about next winter's adventure.

Captured by on Sections 3 & 4, these views are a pretty good reminder of why the Larapinta belongs on your hiking list.

Not ready to wait until next winter? The West Macs still have plenty to offer. Swap the multi-day trek for a shorter hike or day adventure, with Pound Walk at Ormiston Gorge being one of our top picks.

Same incredible landscape, just a little easier to fit into a warm-weather day. 🧡

Big news from Australia’s Outback! 🌟

There are some places in Central Australia where the sky feels like you could reach the starts with the palm of your hand.

At Karlu Karlu/Devils Marbles, the vast granite boulders have stood among the red earth for centuries and now, the skies above them have received an important recognition of their own, too. Karlu Karlu has officially been designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, recognising the exceptional quality of its night skies and the importance of protecting them.

It’s a place where ancient landscapes, living culture, wildlife and the stars above all come together - and now, the darkness itself is being protected for generations to experience. Karlu Karlu/Devils Marbles is on the path of totality for the 2028 Great Australasian Eclipse, so there’s even more reason to put this incredible place on your list. 🌑✨

Ruby Gap in 's words:

"You'll need a 4WD and some hiking shoes, but this is one of the greatest places I've ever been.

This is Ruby Gap, located deep in the East MacDonnell Ranges, and it is quite the drive to get here. It's sandy, boggy, rocky, and it might not seem worth it when you're sitting in the bush pub at Arltunga, but if you've got a 4bie, you owe it to yourself to come down here.

We camped right at the end of the gorge and had it to ourselves. We did the 4km hike out to the waterhole the next day and again had it all to ourselves."

Thank you for the amazing photos and the report from your trip out to the Ruby Gap near Arltunga Reserve!

West MacDonnell Ranges waterholes you can’t miss 💧

If you’re heading west from Alice Springs, make sure you pack your swimmers. The West MacDonnell Ranges are home to some of Central Australia’s most spectacular waterholes that perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring.

#1 Ellery Creek Big Hole — A spectacular natural swimming hole surrounded by towering red cliffs.

#2 Ormiston Gorge — One of the West Macs’ must-see spots, with a beautiful waterhole beneath dramatic gorge walls.

#3 Glen Helen Gorge — A peaceful waterhole framed by towering cliffs and one of the most iconic landscapes along the range.

#4 Redbank Gorge — A narrow gorge leading to a cool, sheltered waterhole with incredible red-rock scenery.

Pro tip: Water levels can vary depending on recent rainfall and seasonal conditions, so check conditions before you go.

Save this for your next West Macs road trip! ❤️

No water? No problem. 🚣‍♂️😂

The Henley-on-Todd Regatta is one of Alice Springs’ most wonderfully quirky traditions because it is a boat race held on the dry Todd River.

Locals and tourists can participate in competitions that take place all day long, some even partake in their own self-built boats! The day is culminated by the battle of 3 ships and spectators choose who the winner is.

Grab your crew and prepare for a day of outback chaos🏃‍♀️🚣‍♂️

Gates open at 11am on the river bed opposite Todd tavern. Tickets $10 per person.
