๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ In 1925, Laverton became home to the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) No.1 Aircraft Depot โ€” a base for the er****on, testing and maintenance of aircraft.

It was officially opened for service on 1 March 1926, becoming the RAAF's third air base after the one nearby at Point Cook and the base at Richmond, New South Wales.

In later years, Laverton became an important training base and administrative centre. In 1989, the operations of Laverton and Point Cook were merged to form RAAF Williams, with the airfield at Laverton subsequently decommissioned in 1996. The remainder of the base remains in operation for administrative functions.

This is just one example of our rich history with Australian service men and women. Pay your respects this Anzac Day at one of the many services in Hobsons Bay: https://bit.ly/42ayB4Q

Ecological control burns are taking place tomorrow and this Friday 11 April (weather permitting) at the Maidstone Street and Horsburgh Drive grasslands, Truganina Explosives Reserve and Emu-Foot Grassland.

Planned burns are conducted during autumn to help maintain, regenerate and increase native plant species, control invasive weeds, and reduce fire loads for the next fire season.

All efforts will be made to reduce smoke and minimise any hazards. Once completed, monitoring will be carried out to ensure the sites remain safe and the fires are fully extinguished.

Our amazing conservation rangers have been collaborating with a group of 20 RMIT students while they participate in an innovative conservation and land management program.

Utilising Sandy Point Nature Reserve as an outdoor classroom, the project sees the students applying hands-on learning while contributing to critical conservation efforts. Our rangers have provided materials, equipment and expert guidance to support the students.

An ambitious yet important task of the project involves constructing a brush fence with dead and fallen branches (pictured). The fence aims to combat erosion using a nature-based solution.

Through the program the students are gaining invaluable field experience while making a meaningful contribution to the preservation of Sandy Point Nature Reserve.
