What’s amazing about the Great Ocean Walk is that you can see so much wildlife just going about their day.
🦘
As long as you keep your distance and calmly pause to simply just watch, you will be rewarded with some wonderful encounters making your hike even more memorable.
🐨
And while you may not always see a platypus or a whale, part of the fun is the excitement of when you spot something you just weren’t expecting. The list is endless!

If you are heading to the Great Ocean Walk these September school holidays, Blanket Bay is a lovely stop off if you feel like a short camping trip.

The campsites are positioned close to the ocean and you have a choice of group sites or individual small sites.

You can start walking from Apollo Bay (approximately 22km) or Shelly Beach car park (13.5km).

If you are not up to carrying your gear you can arrange trailer storage. For more information ⬇️

Worried about steps on the Great Ocean Walk trail?
🥾🥾Most hikers find the steps more than manageable.

Some are stone steps built to fit into the natural environment. Others are covered in mesh to prevent slipping.

Our favorite staircase was designed to re-align the walk and float over the delicate flora and fauna as you approach the Cape Otway Lighthouse.

If you want to avoid steps (if you are planning a short walk section) just get in touch 😃🚶‍♀️🦘

Ever wondered what happens to your bags while you’re out walking the Great Ocean Walk? 🎒

On every Walk91 self-guided package, your luggage is collected, moved and waiting for you at each stop, so all you carry on the track is a light day pack.

You are met by one of our own local drivers who runs through your safety briefing and route notes before your bags go straight into a Walk91 vehicle.

Early starts, accommodation swaps, extra bags you don’t need on the trail, even your own alcohol to enjoy on relaxing evenings along the way — we’ve got a system for all of it (perfected over 20 years!).

Full rundown of exactly how it works —

Beach walks or grass trees?

The Great Ocean Walk track runs as one continuous route and what makes it special is when the tide is high, you can simply switch to the alternative high tide route instead of waiting it out.

Neither option is a compromise. The coastal sections give you long beach stretches and ocean views, while the high tide route winds through lush fern gullies and forest. 🍃🦘🥾

Either way, you’re walking one continuous track from east to west.🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️

Finishing the Great Ocean Walk at the 12 Apostles is a real highlight. 🦘🥾

Most people start the last day at Wreck Beach or the Gables for an approximate 20km walk, but you can walk from Princetown to the 12 Apostles which is more like 6km. You still get wonderful views as you approach the end of the trail.

Thinking about doing the Great Ocean Walk but not sure what to wear on your feet? 🥾🦘🐨

We’d always recommend proper walking or hiking boots — with or without ankle support is fine.

In the hot, dry months some people have gotten away with running or trail shoes with good grip. But especially in winter and spring, when we can get unpredictable showers and the trail can get muddy in places, we wouldn’t risk it.

If you’re buying boots specially for the walk, make sure you wear them in first, and give them a spray with waterproofing before you come.

The Great Ocean Walk isn’t just about its long magnificent beaches. The trail offers some wonderful inland tracks too.

The tall mountain ash trees from Shelly Beach to Blanket Bay are impressive, even though the extremely large ones were felled in the last century for railroads and shipbuilding etc.

These black and white photos show how tall some of the trees were in the Otways and how the loggers had to build their own tram tracks to move them out of the forest.

These days this once bustling logging area is now totally peaceful. All you can hear are the birds, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies (and even deers unfortunately) rustling in the treetops and undergrowth.
