Thomas Hynes was ready to charge into the Eureka Rebellion… Bridget Hynes had other ideas.

So she hid his pants and his weapon.

No pants, no revolution.

He got drunk, passed out, and slept through the most famous uprising in Australian history, entirely thanks to some elite-level thinking at home.

What she would do afterwards would turn her into a hero…

We’ll be heading down to Leongatha soon to visit their very interesting graves… story to come 👀

Melbourne’s first mayor wasn’t some stiff in a suit — Henry Condell ran pubs for a living 🍻

So when the city needed a leader, they looked around and thought… who better than the bloke already running the drinks?

Democracy, but make it local pub logic.

Gold fever hit Victoria and Melbourne basically emptied overnight. Discoveries at places like Ballarat, Bendigo and even closer to home in Warrandyte had people quitting jobs mid-shift and legging it for a shovel and a dream. Absolute chaos… but fair enough tbh.

You go out for one drink and suddenly you’re being taught things you’ll pretend you already knew.

That’s our Gin and Whisky Tour!

The crew at Elysian are the real deal, the kind of bartenders who make you feel smarter just standing near them. Next thing you know you’re deep in a chat about Bakery Hill, absolute pioneers of Australian distilling, and hearing about the “Walter White of whisky” like it’s common knowledge

Good booze, elite bartenders, and just enough knowledge to become unbearable at your next pub catch up video edit by

40,000 Melburnians turned up for a free royal banquet that was planned for 10,000.

When Prince Alfred pulled out over fears of being trampled, the crowd did what crowds do best, stormed the food, drained the wine, and turned it into a full-blown riot.

A royal visit, Melbourne-style. 🍷

Melbourne went more than 150 years without a proper town square… not by accident, but by design.

The early planners weren’t exactly keen on giving people a big open space to gather (read: protest), so the city grew without one.

There was a brief attempt with City Square in the 1980s, then we knocked most of it down anyway.

Now we’ve got Fed Square, which people love, hate, or just use as a meeting point before getting a drink on our Hidden Bars and Laneway Legends Tour.

Took us long enough.

Back in the 1830s, before anyone bothered building a bridge, William Watt was ferrying people across the Yarra on a little punt.

At some point he clearly thought, “this is fine… but what if it came with a free drink?”

So he starts handing out booze mid-crossing, and just like that, his boat becomes the most popular “venue” in town.

Unsurprisingly, the pubs nearby weren’t exactly thrilled. Hard to compete when your rival is literally drifting past your door giving away drinks.

Melbourne’s been finding creative ways to mix transport and alcohol ever since. Hear more about it on our Hidden Bars and Laneway Legends tour!
