Today, 12 August, is World Elephant Day.

A day to celebrate these incredible, intelligent and deeply social animals — but also to remember that elephants around the world still need our protection.

Elephants don’t need to perform for us.
They don’t need to carry us.
They don’t need to paint pictures for us.
And they don’t need to bathe with tourists.

What they need is the freedom to behave like elephants. 🌿🐘

When travelling, our choices matter. Every ticket we buy helps shape the future of elephant tourism.

🐘 Choose sanctuaries where elephants are free to make their own choices.

Heartbreaking in Sri Lanka

🐘 Why are captive elephants in Sri Lanka tethered at both the front AND the back?

Chains and tethers restrict an elephant’s movement. When they are short, the restriction can already be severe. But when an elephant is chained by both its front and rear legs, its ability to move is reduced even further.

The elephant may barely be able to take a step, turn around, walk normally — or even lie down and get up comfortably to sleep.

That is not “keeping an elephant under control” it is torture which will cause serious physical and psychological suffering.

Why is this method used so routinely in Sri Lanka, even for female elephants?

In many other captive elephant populations, restraining an elephant at both the front and rear is generally associated with exceptional circumstances, such as the management of a bull elephant during musth, when additional restraint may be considered necessary for safety.

Yet in Sri Lanka, front and back tethering appears to be routinely used!
Is the purpose of this to restrict an elephant’s movement so severely that, when forced to walk in a perahera, simply being able to move becomes a reward?
