Baird Bay Experience

Baird Bay Experience An unrivalled aquatic experience with wild sea lions & dolphins in pristine waters. You may eventually leave Baird Bay, but it will never leave you.

On South Australia’s rugged Eyre Peninsula is a charming fishing village, so teeming with natural wonder, its impact on visitors is immediate and visceral. At first, a sense of peaceful escape and seclusion; but then, a contrasting impulse of excitement for an adventure that awaits. Thoughtfully appointed Seaside Villas provide a home from which to encounter the magic of a coastal safari: swimming

with wild sealions and dolphins, exploring delicate aquatic ecosystems, witnessing the majesty of Mother Nature at sunset, and sharing stories with some of Australia’s most gifted and passionate field guides. The journey is accented with flavours from an internationally acclaimed chef, crafted simply and skilfully from the region's finest natural ingredients, some of which you may help forage… and catch!

They find us as much as we find them. A pod of dolphins cruising alongside the boat - playful, powerful, and completely in their element. Just one of the moments you might witness on our ocean sightseeing tours this August.

We’re honoured to share that Baird Bay Experience has been inducted into Hall of Fame.

This milestone celebrates more than 20 years of continuous ECO Certification - a rigorous standard that recognises deep, ongoing commitment to sustainability, community, and conservation.

For us, sustainability isn’t a checklist. It’s embedded in everything we do - from respectful marine wildlife encounters, to energy-efficient villas, to supporting local producers and artisans. Every detail matters because this place matters.

Thank you to our guests, partners, and community for helping us do things the right way - for more than two decades and counting.

The bay is quiet. The boats are in. And we’re taking a winter pause.

Baird Bay Experience is now closed and through the month of July. A time to rest, reset, and let the sea lions enjoy the stillness too.

We’ll reopen on 1 August, ready for a new season of salt, sea, and connection.

There’s more to Baird Bay than the ocean.

This time of year, it slows down in all the right ways. Mornings are made for bushwalks and wildlife watching. An afternoon on the bay fishing, while evenings are spent fireside with a glass of wine, just steps from the beach.

Few know we also offer all-inclusive stays - private villas, chef prepared meals, and daily touring designed around your interests that lets you experience the land and sea at your own pace.

Winter suits this place. And it suits those looking to settle in, not just pass through.

As the sun dips below the horizon at Baird Bay, the sky transforms into a canvas of stunning colours - from yellow to orange and pink to purple. Pelicans glide gracefully against this vibrant backdrop finding a place to roost for the night, perfectly silhouetted in the fading light. It’s moments like these that remind us of nature’s incredible beauty.

What not to miss in Australia in 2025 - #8 Baird Bay Seaside Villas!

"The locals have always been friendly at Baird Bay. The small coastal village on the Eyre Peninsula, 300 kilometres north of Port Lincoln, has long been a dream destination for animal lovers, giving the rare opportunity for close-up encounters with wild marine mammals. The area’s playful sea lions and curious dolphins are known for greeting visitors prepared to plunge into the area’s sheltered waters.

Now, following a recent million-dollar refurbishment, this marine safari experience comes with its own safari-style lodge. The Baird Bay Seaside Villas have been reborn as a stylish, all-inclusive offering including chef-prepared meals, surf lessons and excursions exploring the area’s dramatic landscapes, from granite outcrops to rolling dunes. Choose between four-bedroom and three-bedroom lodgings – or book them both and bring the whole gang."

In October our resident Marine Biologist and Swim Guide had the privileged to join the South Australian Department of Environment and Water to take part in a sea lion pup survey of Jones Island.

A record 32 pups were counted, the largest numbers to date. A fantastic result for our colony, but also for the species in general as the Australian Sea Lion is classified as an endangered species with numbers continuing to decline in the waters around Australia.

As the weeks have gone by, these little brown fur balls have shed their fur into a silvery, grey coat, grown in size and have begun swimming in the shallow rock pools around the island learning how to feed and swim using their big pectoral flippers.

You can catch a glimpse of the pups and other members of the Jones Island colony on one of our swimming tours.

Please note: This survey was conducted under scientific research permit -8 and Animal Ethic permit #12/2023. Jones Island is a protected and prohibited wildlife area, which can only be accessed with a research permit. These pictures were taken with a 40-150mm lens.
