Most people know Baird Bay for the sea lions and dolphins. And yes, swimming alongside wild marine life in these protected waters is extraordinary. But there's another side to this place that serious anglers have been quietly keeping to themselves for years.

The western Eyre Peninsula is one of Australia's great fishing frontiers. Cold, nutrient-rich Southern Ocean waters meeting shallow protected bays - the result is one of the most biodiverse and productive fisheries on the continent. King George Whiting, Flathead, Garfish, Silver Trevally, Southern Bluefin Tuna, Yellowtail Kingfish. And right now, as the cooler months settle in, the inshore fishing is at its best.

This is what it looks like when a school of Australian Salmon works the surface.

The beach launch is metres from your door. You're on the water before the light has fully broken. And when you're done for the day, there's only one question worth asking: what are we cooking tonight?

This place is well and truly alive. Ocean. Bush. Wildlife. Birdlife. A 3,800-hectare bay that hums with its own quiet energy, and pulls you into it the moment you arrive.

Baird Bay isn't easy to get to. But that's exactly the point.

As our swim season draws to a close this April, we find ourselves reflecting on another extraordinary time in the bay - the sea lions, the dolphins, the early mornings, vivid sunsets, and the moments that are genuinely hard to put into words.

We'll be back in October.
