What a magical evening at the Walls of China! 🌅 This lovely couple enjoyed a recent Mungo Sunset Tour, soaking up the golden light, wide-open skies, peaceful silence and unforgettable sense of space as the sun slipped below the horizon. 🙌✨

Spring is arguably the best time of year to visit Mungo National Park, with mild, warm days and cool nights, wildflowers and fresh green growth after winter rain, wildlife babies out and about, and long golden evenings made for photography. 📸🌿

Look who’s visiting the Mungo lunette! 💙🧡 The striking Red-backed Kingfisher (Todiramphus pyrrhopygius) is a regular sight around the Walls of China, where the crumbly clay outcrops make the perfect lookout perch for birdwatchers and photographers. With turquoise-blue wings, a white breast, bold black eye-stripe and rusty-red back and rump, this dry-country kingfisher is a real outback beauty! 📸

Despite its name, it rarely catches fish. From a low perch, it launches onto insects, grasshoppers, beetles and crickets, as well as small skinks and lizards. In doing so, it helps keep insect populations balanced. A natural pest controller for the bush and nearby farmland. It is also an important part of the food chain, acting as both predator and prey. 🌿

Spring has arrived in the outback, and everything is looking very, very beautiful! 🌸 The round-leaf pigface is flowering everywhere right now, creating incredible carpets of vivid magenta-pink, daisy-like flowers with bright yellow-white centres. 💗💛

But I always wonder… why do they call it pigface? I keep looking for the pig’s face and can never find it! 🐷 Do you know the answer? Let us know in the comments, mates! 🌿

Seen from above, the Mallee country near Balranald looks like a living artwork after good rain! 🌿 The spinifex hummocks and mallee trees sit like green dots and circles across the deep red earth, creating beautiful patterns and shapes that can only truly be appreciated from the air. Everything is coming back to life…

It’s remarkable to remember that early explorers described this country as “hell on earth”. Imagine trying to push through dense, trackless scrub with horses and carts : no roads, no water and little shade. Their journeys must have been unbelievably tough. Today, gliding over this landscape, the same country feels peaceful, intricate and full of renewal. ❤️

Look at this absolute stunner! Meet the Purple Spotted Gudgeon, one of the most colourful and fascinating native fish swimming through our Murray-Darling basin waterways! 🐟✨

Here are a few quick facts about these local legends:
1. They can change their colours to blend in or show off during breeding season! 🎨
2. Hardworking males take on the job of guarding and fanning the eggs until they hatch. 🥚
3. They are tough survivors perfectly adapted to our outback river systems. 🌊
