A March 2026 visit to Japan: Hiking part of the edo-period Nakasendo trail in Japan was a different kind of experience we had, away from the normal Japan tourist route (rather in addition to it). The trail was an old trade route between Tokyo and Kyoto which in the old days took traders several days walking over mountains and through forests. The route has tea houses and built structures preserved from that period. Our walking route took us from Nakatsugawa to Magome to Tsumago to Kiso Fukushima, quaint mountain villlages in the Central Japanese Alps. The higher altitude Tori pass beyond Kiso was closed for repair and so we ended our hike there. While the route itself is not spectacular with high altitude mountains and alpine lakes, the hike is more a walk through history and gentle and quaint mountain towns of the central Japanese Alps. Because of bear attacks in the last couple of years, we had a bear bell attached to our backpack and were ringing the fixed bear bells along the route 😄 My veg food Gohei Mochi.

I didn't know I would be that interested to see Taipei 101 until I watched Alex Honnold climb it live. Since I was holding my breath the first time around, I watched it again, more relaxed. Anyway, after spending time in the hilly and mountainous parts of Taiwan last week, we decided to spend a day plus in Taipei too and pay homage at the 101 😄 Not by going up to the observatory but walking through the streets and then climbing up the steep Elephant Mountain to get the best and full view of Taipei 101 and the city at large. Taipei is not a Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore or a HongKong with glitz but has a rather old world character to it..... reminded me so much of parts of India in fact.

Pictures that represent strength, resilience and perseverance when setting out to achieve a goal. Meet Karla Wheelock, a mountaineer, an Everest summiteer, the first Iberian-American woman to achieve this feat. I was curious and captivated to hear her narrative first-hand when our paths crossed for a couple of weeks in Kerala. She has the accomplishment of completing the climbs on the seven summits, achieving this in 2005.
