Welcome to Barramal and Milakuk Time ๐ฉ๏ธโจ
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Monday 5 January to celebrate the changing of Djaara seasons in Hargreaves Mall. It was beautiful to gather together and welcome Barramal (Emu) and Milakuk (Lightning) Time - the longest of our six seasons, running from January through to March.
As Kerri Douglas shared, we're starting to notice the seasonal indicators across Djandak: buwatj (kangaroo grass) standing tall with seeds ready for harvest, the Southern Cross high in the night sky, and barramal (emu) completing its breeding cycle. Soon, butterflies will be more abundant, binggal (snakes) and lizards will be out enjoying the sun, and our plants like manna gum, wurrak (banksia), and stringybark will begin flowering.
These seasons aren't dictated by dates on a calendar - they're guided by what the environment tells us. Weather patterns, the stars, animal behaviours, and plants blooming all signal the shifts on Country.
Thank you to Jason Kerr for sharing the sounds of the didgeridoo, and to everyone who came with open hearts to learn about our Culture in a respectful way.
Save the Date: Join us for our next Change of Season event on Wednesday 1 April 2026 as we welcome Murnong (Yam Daisy) and Ngarri (Black Duck) Time.
Dumarr (thank you) for walking with us!
