From tomorrow, the Blue Marlin Golf Classic gets underway at Bermagui Golf Club - kicking off 10 days of golf, connection and activity around Bermagui.

Building on the club’s longstanding Women’s and Men’s Opens, the Classic will welcome local members, visiting golfers, families and spectators from 4–13 September.

But the event is about much more than what happens on the course. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new visitors to town and celebrate the local businesses, volunteers and community that help bring events like this to life.

And you don’t need to be competing to be part of it. The program extends beyond the fairways, with weekend barbecues, plenty of action to watch and a Trivia Night at Bermagui Country Club.

Whether you’re playing, supporting someone on the course or simply coming along to enjoy the atmosphere, everyone is welcome to be part of the Blue Marlin Classic.

One of the best-kept secrets at Fugitives’ Drift might just be our nature walks.

Across our 2,500-acre reserve, a network of well-marked trails allows guests to head out on foot with a detailed map from reception and explore at their own pace. With no dangerous apex predators on the reserve, you can walk independently and often find yourself surprisingly close to giraffe, zebra, kudu, wildebeest and other plains game.

Our most popular route leads to the Ledge Lookout, a view that many of our guests have described as one of the finest in South Africa.

One recent visitor, despite having stayed at many safari lodges, told us that walking the yellow route was the first time they had truly felt immersed in the African landscape. Getting so close to the wildlife on foot was a highlight of their trip, and they left determined to return with their grandchildren.

Many people come to Fugitives’ Drift for the history and discover that the reserve becomes an equally memorable part of their stay.

So, if you’re planning your first visit or thinking about returning, consider giving yourself an extra day or two. There is a lot to discover beyond the battlefields, and sometimes the best way to do it is on foot.

We talk a lot about history at Fugitives’ Drift. We talk about the battlefields, the wildlife, the landscape and everything there is to discover during your stay.

But after a full day of exploring, we have to admit that history faces some pretty stiff competition from a very comfortable four-poster bed!

There are few greater pleasures than returning to your room and realising you have absolutely nowhere else to be.

The battlefields will still be there in the morning. This bed, however, requires your immediate attention!

"The first time I went to Kruger was in the early 90s. I have no idea how many times I've been there, but I do know I'll be going back". Sandy Chamberlin, founder, Sandy's Safaris
