While in Sigiriya we visited the city of Polonnaruwa which was the second capital of ancient Sri Lanka from the 10th to 13th centuries CE. You can also visit the first ancient city of Anuradhapura and the incredible Dambulla Buddhist Cave Temple from Sigiriya making it a great base for 3 or more days. We visited the Cave Temple on the way to our next stop.

Ever wondered how travel agents get paid if you’re not paying extra?

Here’s the truth:

Cruise lines, hotels and tour operators build commission into their pricing — that’s how travel agents are paid.
If you book direct, you’re usually paying the same price…
you’re just not receiving the service, support and expertise that comes with working with an agent.

We work with trusted partners such as Viva Holidays, Intrepid, Expedia, APT, Scenic Tours, Luxury Escapes and Inspiring Vacations (just to name a few), and in many cases our pricing is the same — or even better — than what you’ll find online.

The difference?
✔ Personalised advice
✔ Support if something goes wrong
✔ Time saved
✔ Access to industry knowledge and experience

So before you book your next trip, let’s have a chat. You might be surprised what we can do.

We had an awesome time in Sigiriya which is located in central Sri Lanka. It is a great base for ancient sites, cultural ceremonies, national parks and Ayurvedic experiences (especially the massages).

Kandy is Sri Lanka’s second largest city and is located at 500m in the central highlands. It is built around a scenic lake and is surrounded by lush green hills and was the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka before British colonial rule in 1815.

It’s most famous for the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses a sacred tooth of the Buddha and is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world.

Also covered in this post are visits to an Ayurvedic spice garden and a local village for a home cooked lunch. Loved this section of our trip!

Nuwara Eliya is a cool, misty hill town in central Sri Lanka, sitting at about 1,868 metres above sea level. Often called “Little England,” it was developed by the British during colonial times as a retreat, and retains much of the old-world character with Tudor-style buildings, a golf course, and rose gardens.

It’s also the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, surrounded by lush tea plantations producing some of the world’s finest Ceylon tea.

Yala National Park covers around 979 km² and is famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. We were lucky to see three as well as many elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, mongoose, deer, monkeys and heaps of bird species.

Our accommodation is the Doubletree by Hilton at Weerawila which is magnificent. We highly recommend a few days here.

Two days in Galle gave us some colonial history, cultural experiences and some seriously good beach time at Unawatuna.

Galle is a fortified city in the the south west of Sri Lanka that has a rich history. Its location in the middle of trade routes between China, the Middle East and Europe mad it one of the most important ports in the world.

In 1588 the Portuguese took control from Indian and Arab traders. They constructed the original fortification protecting land invasion.

After a four-day attack from the sea, the Dutch took control in 1640. Following their victory, the Dutch built a well-planned city within the fort.

The Galle Fort fell into British hands in 1796 with little resistance. The British made modifications to the fort, closing the moat, adding a new gate, constructing a lighthouse, and building blockhouses. Sri Lanka gained full independence in 1948 marking the end of British rule.
