Budj Bim Featured in AQUILA Children's Magazine!

We’re excited to share that Budj Bim Cultural Landscape has been featured in the latest issue of AQUILA, a popular children’s magazine that explores history, science and culture in fun and engaging ways!

This special feature introduces young readers to the incredible history of Budj Bim, the world’s oldest known aquaculture system and the deep cultural connections the Gunditjmara people have maintained with this landscape for over 6,600 years. Through interactive storytelling, illustrations and educational content, children can learn about how our ancestors engineered intricate stone channels and weirs to trap and harvest eels one of the earliest examples of sustainable farming.

By sharing Budj Bim’s story with a wider audience, AQUILA is helping to inspire the next generation to appreciate and respect Aboriginal knowledge, innovation, and connection to Country.

🌿 We Are Open & Ready to Welcome You Back! 🌿

We’re excited to announce that Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café is open as usual and our cultural tours are running as normal!

While Budj Bim National Park remains off-limits for now, we are still offering incredible guided experiences to the Kurtonitj and Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Areas. These sites showcase the deep cultural significance of Gunditjmara Country, including ancient stone eel traps, aquaculture channels and traditional stone house sites.

This is also an important time to talk about cultural burning, why it has always been a vital part of caring for Country for Gunditjmara people and how it plays a crucial role in fire management across Australia. Our old people understood how to use fire to protect and regenerate the land and it’s something we continue to practice and share today.

Come and join us for a tour, enjoy a meal at the Tae Rak Café and reconnect with the beauty, history and culture of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscape.

History, Reflection and Learning from the Past

On a recent Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Tour this week, we had a visitor who shared an unexpected connection to history. His great-great-uncle was Fred Brooks the dingo trapper whose death in 1928 led to the horrific Coniston Massacre. In the brutal aftermath, over 60 Aboriginal men, women and children were killed at different sites by police and settlers.

Gwoya Tjungurrayi was a survivor of this massacre, a Warlpiri-Anmatyerre loreman. His resilience and survival became a symbol of strength and today his image is honoured on the Australian $2 coin.

What made this moment powerful was the visitor’s own journey. He came to Budj Bim not to defend the past, but to understand it to learn from the truth of what happened and to grow from it.

This is what Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Tours is about. It’s not just about sharing our deep history, it’s about shifting mindsets, opening conversations and ensuring the past is never forgotten. its a conversation about Truth Telling.

We welcome all who are ready to listen, learn and walk forward together.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? 💡

Budj Bim is a dormant volcano 🌋 But for us Gunditjmara Traditional Owners it’s an ancestral half man half spirit. The lava flows from Budj Bim shaped the landscape and helped create the sophisticated eel aquaculture systems that our ancestors designed. 🐟🔥
