Some great tips for your snow holiday! ❄️☃️🏂🎿
Bringing the family up to make the most of the early spring-like weather and enjoy some snow play? Paddy Hoy, whose family has been in the business of hiring and retailing snow gear for many decades, has this advice for what you’ll need to get everyone kitted with everything they need to stay warm, dry and happy happy happy!
#1 Allow PLENTY of time to get to where you need to be.
#2 Gloves or mittens with a drawstring (warmer, drier and won’t get lost!).
#3 Goggles with clear lenses, not too big and compatible with a helmet.
#4 Helmets: not compulsory on the ski runs (except in ski school) but highly advisable.
#5 Snow boots which can be rented for a one-off snow trip.
#6 Thermals: Depends on the weather but much better to have multiple thin layers that can be removed than wearing thick woolly jumpers.
#7 Ski Socks: Really improves their comfort but if budget’s an issue, long socks, not too thick, that won't fall down.
#8 Clothing: It's a personal choice but onesies are great for kids under about eight, particularly for snowplay.
#9 Toboggans: Moulded plastic approved only! (Nothing made of wood or metal. And use them in designated areas only!)
#10 Skiing vs Snowboarding: Snowboarding is much harder for kids to learn. Ski school takes skiers from three (toilet trained) and snowboarders from seven. The kids club at the Big D is great. Instructors are very professional and take great care of kids. Allow plenty of time and aim to be there well before 9am for check-in. Take the kids inside for a hot chocolate if they’re cold.
